Last weekend I visited Dutch Design Week 2011 in Eindhoven and one of the presentations that stood out was MASS.
Designers are taking a critical approach to mass production. Equipped with individualized tools and technologies, they respond to established fabrication systems by taking on not only form, but the methods and materials used to manufacture work.
This exhibition looks at production from two angles: the value of producing on a mass scale, and the materiality of producing mass. Where existing production methods are inaccessible, designers are free to be contradictory and naive in their approach. By developing a means of production, they take an active role in not just the final outcome, but in the tools and the choreography of making, challenging the conventional meaning of the word mass.
