Esther Perbandt!

Esther Perbandt, a name I knew but I never got the chance to see her work for real. One of the great pleasures of the time I spent in Toronto during FAT Arts & Fashion Week, was to actually meet meet Esther in person. I loved her show! From now on I am a officially a fan of her work, for sure!

Esther Perbandt was born and raised in Berlin, got toughened in Moscow and polished in Paris. She completed a European Master’s degree in Fashion and Textile Design in the French capital as well as a postgraduate study at the IFM – Institut Francais de la Mode. After this intensive period of study, Esther worked in the design team at Chacok in the South of France. With a wealth of experience under her belt, she returned to Berlin at the beginning of 2004 to found her own fashion label esther perbandt.

MAC GUFFIN AW 12-13 collection at FAT
MAC GUFFIN AW 12-13 // “Everything that must be said instead of shown, is lost to the audience, because it is forgotten right away.” With Alfred Hitchcock’s words in mind, the coming season is dedicated to MacGuffin; a term, popularised by Hitchcock, for an object or a person that catches the viewers’ attention or drives the plot of a work of fiction. The ‘MacGuffin’ appears in the story line for a mere moment before disappearing into insignificance. For ‘esther perbandt’ the person wearing her clothes and his or her needs are most important, nevertheless she stays true to herself keeping casual, yet strictly graphic and androgynous style that  characterizes her label. Integrated chains, extravagant seams, irregular pleats, handcrafted leather cuirasses and accessories put together with chains and thick wool yarn, piped pockets from converted sleeve slits, fabrics from shredded ribbons, which become new tartan interpretations, as well as borrowings from old Scottish military uniforms – all this distinguishes the new collection. For the first time esther perbandt presents a collection kept completely in black.
