Maison Martin Margiela couture fall 2012 |
Since a few weeks I am visiting the fashion sites to view the catwalk shows to SS2013. I finally had a bit of time for that. What struck me in particular is that in the styling and silhouettes the heads of models are covered with masks, adornment and hats. I find it fascinating and very pretty. In addition I have also done it myself in my last collection ‘
The Passengers’.
It struck me that several young labels and also renowned fashion houses presented silhouettes where he head is covered.
Last Sunday Lidewij Edelkoort, influential trend forecaster, was the guest of Zomergasten (Dutch tv-show). In this special evening she talked about her work as a trend watcher and of course also about trends to come. One of the topics was the trend of 'pulling back, covering head and crawling back'. We are going back to anonymity, back in our own world; masks, capes, the hoodies. In times of crisis we crawl back into our own world, and the world is in a big crisis. And it is in fashion design where we can already see this trend.

I have selected several stunning looks for spring summer 2013 where you can see some of these elements already translated into fashion design.
What is so beautiful about fashion is that it is an dynamic artistic expression, which absorbs the society and translates it in beautiful things. We can all remember that violent riots took place last year in London. Throughout the world there are demonstrations, riots, cries for freedom. At the same time the world comes together during the summer Olympics in London. World is absurd.
You can see that on the catwalk, in London for example, where fashion is often translated from street to catwalk. It is not about the ‘I’ and ‘me’ but about societies, subcultures and groups of people fighting for the same cause.
