Ethnical Costumes

Ethnical Costumes by 3 BA - Class of 2015 of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp

Third year bachelor students of the Fashion Department of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp are required to present a collection of eight silhouettes by the end of the year. This collection must be based on a preliminary study of an ethnical culture. This study leads to surprising discoveries, which, combined with the student’s own experiences, can give rise to an original collection.

The recreation of a typical costume or dress is seen as a necessary period of contemplation before starting to design a collection. Here, using the ethnical costume and resources as a reference, the patterns, volumes, structures, fabrics accessories, grooming, and decoration, have to be examined and recreated. In the third year a profound reinterpretation of the colours and textures of fabrics, embroideries and accessories are the sources used to design a visionary collection, which is created in the second half of the third year. They show the student’s personality, empathy, technical skills, and creativity — but most of all his or her passion.
