voddenmannen - Pop-up shop at Ted.amsterdam

Fashion designer Rens de Waal introduces exclusive collection voddenmannen in Amsterdam.

With Leger des Heils ReShare as a collaborator and supplier of damaged vintage, voddenmannen taps into a waste stream that otherwise would be reduced to the fiber prematurely. voddenmannen2 is the second batch of affordable design items and will be available via a pop-up shop, the 13th and 14th of Nov at ted.amsterdam. This time teaming up with scent designer Liza Witte who worked on a voddenmannen textile scent.

The voddenmannen "textile scent" is a development to give the remodeled items a new layer of shine, or newness so to say. But also has a practical reason behind it, vintage clothing often has a particular scent that you would rather leave behind. The items are first washed with a detergent of Liza Witte and are then ready to get a fragrance layer of “Shine” on top. It is a product in development, and will have its intro at the pop-up days.

voddenmannen is an initiative of fashion designer Rens de Waal in which he investigates his role as a ‘Fashion Remodelist’, an introduction of a mentality in which we look at the value of clothing in a different way.

Rens discovered that Leger des Heils ReShare collects a lot of good quality (vintage) clothing that has something wrong with it: a hole or a stain. Not all of these items can be repaired manually, so are often reduced to the fiber. He saw an opportunity here, as these items are of good quality and simply need some care and imagination for reinvention. Personally curated by fashion designer Rens de Waal and his sensibility for colour and quality of fabrics, the garments are translated, stripped and updated into contemporary pieces. This does not mean the resulting product is in its final stage, but rather emphasizes its possibility to transform again.

About voddenmannen

Rens de Waal believes that working with what we already have leads to an exciting design challenge. Starting with what kind of amends the existing items require, he develops several intuitive design solutions to renew and transform them. This results in an easy to wear product with a subtle design handwriting. The name voddenmannen (loosely translated rag men) and its historical function stems from a time where clothing meant value, something we forgot in our modern consumer society. De Voddenman is an intriguing historic reference, and by transforming and shaping it to todays world it is more than ready for a comeback.

Leger des Heils ReShare
As the largest textile collector in the Netherlands, Leger des Heils ReShare is always looking for new opportunities to give old textiles new life. For starters they do this in their own 10 second-hand and vintage clothing stores: the ReShare Stores. They also collaborate with innovators and designers, such as the Hul le Kes ReShared collection. In their work they oppose disposable consumption and strive for a circular textile chain.
