Łódź Young Fashion Award 2018

Laima Jurča
ŁÓDŹ YOUNG FASHION AWARD 2018

Since 2017, the city of Łódź repositioned itself as a relevant moment in the year for the emerging young designers. The international contest “Łódź Young Fashion Award” dedicated to professional designers and debutants - artists associated with fashion schools, art colleges and freelancers, born after 1988. The theme of this year's edition was "FREEDOM". On October 20, twelve finalists where given the stage on the last day of Łódź Young Fashion festival.
Twelve outstanding designers presented their collections at the Academy of Fine Arts Łódź, the venue where all fashion shows of Łódź Young Fashion take place. Laima Jurča from Latvia was named winner by the jury.  The main prize - the Manequine statuette and 30,000 the euro was handed over by the Major of the City of Lodz, Hanna Zdanowska. Emilie Thirion from Belgium won the special prize of 2,000 euro by the Academy of Fine Arts Łódź.
The winning collection, PIECGADES ĢENERĀL MĒĢINĀJUMS, thematically refers to the Soviet era - the period of empty shops, limited choice and all-encompassing drabness, which forced huge creativity and ingenuity, and encouraged to create bold things in the comfort of your home. Her author studied "Art of Fashion" at the Art Academy of Latvia and "Fashion Design" at Latvijas Mākslas Akademy. Her plans are to devote her prize to creating her own brand.
Łódź Young Fashion is a great new event organised by Academy of Fine Arts Łódź and City of Łódź, making it again the most interesting fashion event in Poland.

The III Gorgones - ODIO and Jakub Pieczarkowski

ODIO & Jakub Pieczarkowski took the stage at the 11th edition of FashionPhilosophy Fashion Week Poland and delivered a great show. After the amazing previous collection that they also presented at FASHIONCLASH Festival 2014 I was looking forward to their new collection.
I have been following their work ever since my first visit in Łódź and every time they succeed to surprise.
First part of the show contained beige/pastel looks with shapes and looks unlike their previous work, and this was refreshing to see while the second part seemed more familiar to their previous work. The total presentation was a breath of fresh air and all pieces contain something to look at, from print to interesting textures and material experiments.

11th edition FashionPhilosophy Fashion Week Poland

From 22 - 26 October Łódź, the third-largest city in Poland hosted it's 11th edition of FashionPhilosophy Fashion Week Poland. At first sight Łódź is an unusual place as a fashion destination but as a former heart of the Polish fashion industry and the remains of industrial heritage the city is a perfect backdrop for new fashion generation.
In the last 5 years FashionPhilosophy Fashion Week Poland has increasingly grown and paved ways to new generation of designers and now that I attended for the fifth time this is still what I like about this event. There is a great energy and drive from the new designers and they are actually the ones that steal the show.
The stage for opening show of the 11th edition of FashionPhilosophy Fashion Week Poland was in the hands of the graduates from the Fashion department of Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź. Graduation Gala included collection by designers such as Damian Konieczny, Katarzyna Wirzewska, Agnieszka Zarzycka and duo Sowik Matyga and design collective HANGER.

The fashion week schedule is divided in Studio shows, Off Out Of Schedule and Designer Avenue. What I like about FPFWP is that there is more to see and do next to the shows such as the exhibition of young fashion photographers, fashion film programme and showrooms.  The showroom is getting better each time and clearly this edition with a great selection and quality of brands and shops displayed. To name a few: Fashion Dealers, Jaroslaw Ewert, NON, ROH'AN, Nanko,  Odio & Jakub Pieczarkowski, Marthu, ID.FOR.FUN, Piotr HANGER and more.

Marcel, Philippe & Noémie
Coming back to the runway shows I was of course very proud that FASHIONCLASH Festival 2014 designer Baiba Ladia has been selected to show her collection. But she was not the only FASHIONCLASH designer, promising talent Grzegorz Marcisz from the brand ZWYRD presented again a very strong collection in the Off Out Of Schedule programma. Off Out of Schedule offered more good collection such as The Puppies, Paulina Ptashnik and the Macademian Girl Award winner Kas Kryst. For stealing the show at Designer Avenue we can blame the duo Odio and Jakub Pieczarkowski, who's show was one of the best this edition. Their work is like a cocktail of Polish avant-garde and London vibe.
Furthermore there where more interesting collections on the runway display coming from Bajer Ola - Bola, Claudia Danna, Aleks Kurkowski, Nuno Gama, Dawid Tomaszewski and Nah-Nu Katarzyna Skorek.

To conclude this I have to thank the FPFWP team for their hospitality, partnership and friendship.  It is always such a pleasure to be guest at this wonderful event.

10th edition of FashionPhilosophy Fashion Week Poland

Last week I attended FashionPhilosophy Fashion Week Poland for the fourth time in a row. This 10th edition took place in new venue, Expo Łódź. As always it was a wonderful experience and honorable to be with a group of lovely people such as representatives from Portugal, Germany, France, Netherlands, Kazakhstan and so on. What I like about this event is that there is more to do than watching runway shows. There is a huge showroom featuring various brands, there is a fashion film program, press tours and diners for special guests. Furthermore, FashionPhilosophy Fashion Week Poland gives the opportunity to discover new designers.

Magdalena Kubalańca at FashionPhilosophy Fashion Week Poland

Magdalena Kubalanca graduated with success from Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź in 2008. She was awarded for her graduation collection and the winner of Gruf Fashion Show in 2009. She launched her label in 2012 and based on what I have seen there I see potential. At moment this collection reminded me of Maison Martin Margiela and Demeulemeester.
The collection is availible at http://fullofstyle.pl/magdalena-kubalanca-o_p_146_1.html

Agata Wojtkiewicz presented her collection during Fashion Philosophy Fashion Week Poland last weekend.
I got a chance to see the collection's lovely detail at Andel's Hotel during the international conference.

Fashion Philosophy Fashion Week Poland 2012

Poland was one of those countries on my wish list and there I was last weekend. Together with FASHIONCLASH I was invited to attend the international conference that was organized in connection to Fashion Philosophy Fashion Week Poland in Łódź.
The conference was held in the amazing Andel's Hotel in Łódź that is located in the Manufactura neighbourhood, a huge former industrial complex. Andel's hotel is really worth a visit, it is actually one of the best hotel's I have ever stayed in. The opening of the Fashion Philosophy Fashion Week Poland also took place  at the Andel's hotel on Thursday 24th.
City of Lodz used to be the capital for Polish textile industry until the major factories closed in the 90's. In recent years the city is recovering with great initiatives like the Fashion Philosophy Fashion Week Poland, Łódź design festival and the impressive Manufactura. Now Łódź is the place to be and is the avant-garde cultural capital of Poland.

Andel's Hotel
Yes, Polish fashion is emerging, there is room for improvement but there is loads of potential in Polish fashion scene. The international conference 'Promotion of Polish Fashion Industry on the International Market' gave more insight in the general development and possibilities of the Polish fashion industry.
In recent years I have noticed that Polish fashion scene is emerging and now that I was there I've experienced it.
Each year FASHIONCLASH receives strong applications from Polish designers and it was a pleasure to see some of them in the program. FASHIONCLASH Maastricht 2012 participants Kamila Gawronska-Kasperska and Agnieszka Natasza Splewińska showed their collections.

The schedule offers a broad and rather full program with shows from established and 'celebrities' designers, emerging talents, Out off schedule program, showrooms, young fashion photographers exhibition and parties.
Most collections on the catwalk were wearable and not that interesting, the best collections were from emerging designers and graduates of Łódź Art Academy ASP. My personal favorite above all was the collection of Mads Dinesen, who showed on behalf of Not Just A Label.
It seemed that he general attention went more to established designers while the young designers really stole the show.
The showroom was bit messy but nevertheless I found some very nice young labels like She's a Riot, Aloha From Dear and Dudzińska (also former FASHIONCLASH participant).
At last I have to mention and thank the initiators of the conference and the fashion week for the warm hospitality and good organization. It could not have been a better occasion to visit Poland than to attend this conference and Fashion Week in Łódź.
FASHIONCLASH Team
I hope that I will be invited again and witness the growth of Polish fashion scene.
