Last Saturday I spontaneously took the train to Amsterdam to see 'The Raven / A Requiem', the latest play by my dear friend Daria Bukvić. It took me hours to get there by train with all the delays and I was almost too late. However the experience was breathtaking and worth it all.
I can go on with praise...but it is one of those performances you can't forget. ♥'s
It is a pitty that this was the last performance.
The Raven / A Requiem as directed by Daria Bukvić is a free interpretation of Edgar Allan Poe’s classic poem from 1845. A man is mourning a woman. A raven visits him… What can you do about a loneliness that can never be resolved? Poe’s dark masterpiece is revived in an intimate, visual performance. An ode to lost loves and lonesome lovers.
Daria Bukvić (Bosnia-Herzegovina, 1989) graduated in 2011 from the directing course at the Toneelacademie Maastricht. Dennis Kelly’s 'Puin' was her first Frascati Production, in the spring of 2012.

'Don't shoot the messenger' by Vincent van der Valk
Last weekend I went to Het Huis van Bourgondie to see the first solo performance by Vincent van der Valk: 'Don't shoot the messenger'.
I have seen Vincent play in 'The Lonesome West' (Daria Bukvic) and in 'Oh my God, it's a horse' (Casper Vandeputte) he impressed me in both productions with his acting performance.
'Don't shoot the messenger' is a dynamic and contemporary theatre performance about the search for the truth about the world. He holds a mirror up to him self but also confronts the audience with it. Are we really free to make our own choices? What's real and what is fake? Heavy questions and issues come together in an exciting and clever performance where all of Vincent talents successfully come together. It is certainly one of the better performances of young theatre-makers I've seen recently. Shoot or don't shoot the messenger? Vincent van der Valk proves to be a very promising actor / theatre-maker.
I really like the poster and image design by that Badly Designed Suitcase.

The Lonesome West by Daria Bukvić

The Lonesome West premiered yesterday in Het Huis van Bourgondië.
Het Huis van Bourgondië invited me to be the host for one evening and invite audience, so I invited fifteen friends/collegues.
It was the perfect evening and play to introduce my friends to theatre and Het Huis van Bourgondië.

My dear friend Daria Bukvić is graduating this year from Toneelacademie Maastricht as theatre director.
Daria is fascinated by the man who chooses cruelty as a means to mask his vulnerability and she finds this in the play 'The Lonesome West' by the Irish playwright Martin McDonagh. The play made her think back to her childhood. The time that she grew up in a small Catholic village and invented stories to escape the suffocation of the small community.
This dark satire takes place in the godforsaken village Leenane. Where the pews are empty, unemployment and regular killings take place within homes. We follow two brothers who are bitter towards each other to life and are complicit in the murder of their father. A young priest who comes from another village, sees his parish before his eyes languish. He is the only one that makes attempt to restore the community and to flourish brotherly love between the boys. And then there's a young girl who pursues a forbidden love.
The writer Martin McDonagh has won many awards for his theater and film texts, including a BAFTA Award for the script of the film 'In Bruges'. McDonagh has been called the "Tarantino" from the theater ", because of the same combination of violence and humor.
