Common Carnaval Maastricht

On February 7th Common Carnaval project took part of the official Carnaval Maastricht parade. This was truly an unforgettable experience where the true meaning of Carnaval was brought to daylight under thousands of people who cheered along the parade. FASHIONCLASH took part at the project, mostly helping development of costumes with the fashion designer Ebby Port. The outcome was a splendid colorful clash material representing various cultures of the world. From now on Carnaval is always have a special place in my heart.

Carnaval is one of (if not) the most powerful rituals known to our city. Maastricht cherishes its customs. Both old and new traditions exist right next to one another. It's all a matter of giving each other space. This is what makes Maastricht a good city to live in, to live life in and to visit.
'Carnaval' is one of the oldest of these traditions. The ritual that culminates in the days of the carnaval festival is built from a wide variety of events: Gatherings of people, in large or small numbers, even when 'Vastelaovend' (the Limburgian name for Carnaval) is still just a date on the calendar we look forward to. Creating costumes, building a float, playing music, having food and drinks. We do all of these things together, as a group.
The theme of the Maastrichtian Vastelaovend is to connect, through ‘Plezeer & Sjariteit’, through fun and charity.
‘Common Carnaval’ is a project by, for and with citizens of Maastricht, those born to the city as well as refugees and newcomers. The refugees haven't just left their city, village or home. When they fled they had to leave the belongings, the moments, and the locations that shaped their every day life behind. They also left their shared rituals: the celebrations they shared with family, friends, neighborhoods, cities or even an entire country.
One of the pillars of the 'Mestreechter Geis', the pride of any Maastrichtian, is the tolerant way of life.

This is why Common Carnaval was initiated as a wholehearted welcome for all refugees.
"We want to meet them, help them participate, and make them feel included in our community. We can do this by sharing our rituals bound to the Carnaval with them. By inviting them to create costumes together, by building objects and a float together, and by taking part in the parade together."

Core value of celebrating Carnaval is questioning society and every one's social role in a humorous, curious, and respectful manner. Therefore a temporary Carnaval's Society was formed, a union that was led by a refugee-Prince (Ali from Syria) and a Princess Carlene who is 'ein vaan us' (Limburgian: one of us, referring to the people who speak the Maastricht dialect). The traditional ‘Council of eleven' leading, consisted of a number of young Maastrichtians, some young artists and a few young refugees or asylum seekers.
During the preparation fase this council tried to connect all inhabitants of Maastricht through the use of mild humor. In the meantime the project received major media attention throughout the country offering a platform for a positive dialogue of intergration.

Origin of Common Carnaval
The very first draft of the idea to build a float came into being at Zuyd Hogeschool: iArts students named Tess Elschot, Jasper Wüller, Gerold Sewcharan, Raki Eckstein-Kovacs worked on a project adressing the current issue of refugees under the guidance of music theater company 'Het Geluid Maastricht' . After a conversation with 'de Tempeleers' and after receiving a letter of recommendation from mayor Annemarie Penn - Te Strake, 'Het Geluid Maastricht' and 'Bureau Europa' have thought about how to apply the project citywide by attracting multiple partners. Furthermore they embraced the idea of 'commoning', to put development and production processes in the hands of a communal network in order to use a collective way of working where civilians and professional organisations provide added value towards society as a whole. The goal here is to stimulate an increasing level of social involvement. In a project that connects societal, performative and designpractices.

Common  Carnaval is made possible by:
Stichting Elisabeth Strouven Stichting Kanunnik Salden Nieuwenhof, iArts Maastricht, Not Just A Number, Het Geluid Maastricht, FASHIONCLASH, Dear Hunter, COA, Bureau Europa, HS Zuyd, Tout Maastricht, Code 043, Gemeente Maastricht, Studio Noto

Best of designSUPERMARKET 2015

The 9th edition of international festival of contemporary design designSUPERMARKET 2015 took place December 10 - 13 at Kafkův dům in Prague's city center.

On behalf of FASHIONCLASH I found myself in Prague again with aim to scout Czech designers and to represent Dutch talent. FASHIONCLASH and designSUPERMARKET teamed up last year and as a result of this collaboration three Dutch designers who participated at FASHIONCLASH Festival 2015 where selected to showcase their work. Manon Boertien, Jivika Biervliet and Bluedenîmes represented FASHIONCLASH and the Netherlands. Like previous year, Czech designers where given the opportunity to pitch their work. During the Modeschau fashion talk with Veronika Ruppert, winners where announced. Among the winners was the hat brand Sofyahat by designer Sofya Samareva, who is now selected for the second time in a row.  Second selected brand is a brand new collective of young fashion designers who joined forces under the name Dry Milk of Virgin Mary and the third brand is the jewellery collective Unosto. The winners are selected to take part at FASHIONCLASH Festival 2016.

with the winner for FASHIONCLASH Festival 2016
designSUPERMARKET is one of the most relevant platforms for Czech designers, offering an outstanding selection of emerging Czech designers.  The selection contains names that where present there last year but also new entries such as the innovative label LEM design who presented a collection with pieces that are transformable to various shapes.
Next to local designers there are also interesting brands from Israel to be discovered such as Muslin Brothers, Danit Peleg and Ezekiel design.

Spot On Fashion Maastricht by FASHIONCLASH

Maarten van Mulken
FASHIONCLASH Spot On! ‘Fashion Maastricht’ pop-up exhibition at VVV Maastricht

In the weekend of 28 and 29 November the Dinghuis, historical building in Maastricht known as the VVV Maastricht, temporarily served as a pop-up museum for designers linked to the city of Maastricht.

Continuing the successful 'Fashion Maastricht' in Chengdu China, FASHIONCLASH is presenting the second exhibition focusing on designers that are linked to Maastricht by origin or education.
The presented work stands out for its textile and material research, innovative tailoring or the conceptual approach. This exhibition gives a glimpse of authentic ideas offered by a new generation of visionaries that are shaping the new history of Maastricht, a city with a long tradition of arts and crafts and known for its sense of style, quality of life and dynamic cul- tural scene. Most of the featured designers are alumni of MAFAD, the Maastricht Academy of Fine Arts and Design. Among them you can see pieces of designers that are successfully emerging and work of the latest generation of fashion design graduates.

This is the first time an overview of local designers is on display with an exhibition, offering an perspective to narrate and discuss what actually 'Fashion Maastricht' means.
Ever since the starting point of FASHIONCLASH there has been a huge development. Looking back to the starting years, FASHIONCLASH platform started from zero and now fashion is included in the policy of Maastricht's future vision. Next to the growing government support it pleases me most to conclude with this exhibition that the local designers are on the rise. More designers decide to stay in Maastricht, designers are better entrepreneurs and most of all it is clear that the artistic qualities of local designers have grown.

Participants: Anna Gregor, Bluedenîmes, Danielle Vroemen, Ebby Port, Edmeé Jongen, Gabriel Guevara, Jessie Beurskens, Joelle Boers x Sofya Samareva, Julia Aumann, Julia Schmitz, Marsha Kessels, Maarten van Mulken, Lotte Milder, Linda Friesen, Linda Maissan, Marlou Breuls, Mieke Kockelkorn, Mona Steinhaeusser, Minou Lejeune, Reinder Schmidt, Renate Cuiper, Strikks, Verena Klein and Sem Shayne.

Hermione Flynn - FASHIONCLASH Festival 2015

HERMIONE FLYNN - (IN)DIFFERENCE

Looking back to the 7th edition FASHIONCLASH Festival is a real pleasure, especially when things collide into timeless moments. When fashion becomes more than just clothes and skips a heartbeat because we can just be who ever we want to be without looking away. When fashion places a mirror to confront us with what beauty really means. The moment when transgender model Gia Bab, divine human being, steps on the stage it always impresses. But this time it was everything and more.
Conceptual designer Hermione Flynn staged a catwalk performance with minimal but highly effective acts, expressing her collection '(In)Difference'.
Taking unisex to a a higher level this collection explores gender codes and gender inequality.

Gender Exhibition - FASHIONCLASH Festival 2015

VERWEVEN 2015 by Nina Willems
Gender and Fashion

Curated exhibition at FASHIONCLASH Festival 2015

Gender is the sociocultural identity that relates to a person’s biological sex. it is said that this identity is a performance, since there is not only one way to male or female. Gender is perceived as a spectrum nowadays. it’s a stirring topic that has also been very present in fashion this year due to fashion’s ability to reflect one’s mood, personality and identity to theworld.
FASHIONCLASH Festival takes a stand for gender diversity and individualism. the festival wants to raise awareness about the problems that occur when it comes to gender issues and how crucial public opinion about it can be. that’s why this exposition gathers artists that are also challenged to think about the different aspects of gender. they offer the viewer a new perspective by illustrating what gender means to them individually. For instance, the works address gender in other cultures, transgenderism, gender in history, gender in media, body expression, etcetera are exhibited. FASHIONCLASH Festival brings together these different works and visions and celebrates self expression and diversity.

Origin Passion and Beliefs 2015

Yojiro Kake
Origin Passion and Beliefs

An international encounter orginized by Fiera di Vicenza and Not Just A Label.

Originally launched in May 2014, ORIGIN PASSION AND BELIEFS was conceived in collaboration with Fiera di Vicenza President Matteo Marzotto and Stefan Siegel, Founder of NOT JUST A LABEL. The intention: to create an innovative fashion event pairing global independent design talent with Italy’s most distinguished manufacturers.

From the 14th until the 18th of May I found myself (on behalf of FASHIONCLASH) in Vicenza, the historic centre of fashion design and textile manufacturing in Italy.
The second edition of Origin Passion and Beliefs brought together 100 emerging designers from all over the globe together with the experts of Italian manufacturing industry, international fashion institutions. The 4 day event included a variety of lectures and talks. Eventually the fair was closed with the Mittelmoda Fashion Award.

“Made in Italy is synonymous with quality and luxury. I am passionate about Italian manufacturing. I believe it is our responsibility to stimulate our economy while welcoming the next generation of fashion stars.” says Fiera di Vicenza President Matteo Marzotto.

“We have curated an unprecedented list from around the world. Designers from emerging markets such as Serbia, Ukraine, Brazil, Lebanon, Lithuania and Indonesia have been invited along with talent from the Italy, UK, USA, Canada, South Korea, Japan, Australia and many more. The designers were selected for their commercial viability, their commitment to handcraftsmanship, sustainability, and their point of differentiation. This is an amazing privilege and honor for the brands to meet with some of the industry’s most notable leaders. Our goal is to empower artisanship and individuality and to combat fast fashion,” says Stefan Siegel.

Vicenza historical center
Scouting talents is one of my core activities and finding myself under the roof among 100 talented designers was a blast. The outstanding selection of designers featured familiar names but also many new names. The fair was divided in several segments: Leather, Stone, Textile and Technology. Furthermore OPB invited 20 institutions such as FASHIONCLASH, Fashion Forward Dubai, Belgrade Fashion Week Design Collective, Esmod Berlin, Worth Project, Doing Fashion and Maisons de Mode.
