Y/Project Fall 2019

Musician Sevdaliza wearing one of the striking looks

In past years Glenn Martens continuously delivers. He one of the most relevant of this generation. For Y/Project he presented a collection with main focus on eveningwear and his experimental tailoring signature.
For WWD he stated the following, which is exactly the apparent strength of Glenn Martens. “We do what we want, and we really want to have fun, and we don’t really give that much of a s–t about anything else,” the designer said backstage. “The idea is that we really want to show garments. We don’t want to get stuck in all the hype.”

Encounter with Glenn Martens at Modefabriek

Cutting Edge, the avant-garde platform of Modefabriek, offers a vision of the future by presenting young and promising fashion labels. For the 33rd edition of Modefabriek the spotlight is on Glenn Martens.
In February 2012, during Paris Fashion Week, Glenn Martens launched his own womenswear line after years of building up experience at Jean Paul Gaultier and most recently at Honest by Bruno Pieters.
The lauch of his label can be called memorable because ever since he is mentioned in many magazines and publications.
This was not my first encounter with Glenn. We met in 2008 during Let's Play Fashion event in Gent where he showed his graduation collection. Glenn graduated from the Royal Academy of Arts in Antwerp in the same year.
Inspiration for his AW 12/13 collection comes from his hometown Bruges and the city's Gothic architecture. This is translated in constructive tailoring and impeccable details. Each piece is strong on its own. After seeing the collection online It was a great pleasure to see it with my own eyes and to encounter Glenn Martens again.
I am very much looking forward to his next collection that will be shown during SS2013 Paris Fashion Week.

Modefabriek summer 2012 edition

Last weekend I visited the summer 2012 edition of Modefabriek in Amsterdam. Modefabriek is truly the Netherlands' largest and leading fashion trade show. For already 33 editions. What I like about the fair is that is fresh, clear, well organised and that it also provides platform for young labels.

Here is an overview of my personal highlights of this edition of Modefabriek:

- Talent 2012: Carlo Wijnands curated the 7 best fashion graduates from Dutch fashion academies.

- Cutting Edge presents Glenn Martens: for this edition the avant-garde platform Cutting Edge puts the spotlight on Glenn Martens.

DFF Dutch Touch Coming Home: platform initated by Dutch Fashion Foundation where 11 prominent Dutch labels are presenting their ss2013 collections.

Participants for this edition: Bas Kosters, Studio Sober, Marcha Hüskes, Jessica Joyce, Marloes Blaas, Youasme Measyou, A.MAZE (People of the Labyrinths), Ready to Fish, Sjaak Hullekes, Jupe and Spijkers en Spijkers.

- MINT: MINT is a new tradeshow/event in Amsterdam, part of Modefabriek. It combines tradeshow and event, fashion and lifestyle. MINT has a vision for the future of fashion: great style, made with respect for people and our environment.

- MAD Brussels: fashion and design platform from Brussel with designers like Pierre-Antoine Vettorello and Marc Philippe Coudeyre http://www.madbrussels.be

- HTNK OneDayShop
- Trash & Treasures: with FEE Conceptstore
