Hermione Flynn: A 3D Performance Artist

A new era has begun at the Berlin fashion-house, Hermione Flynn. As a trained performance artist, Flynn has always pioneered clothing design centered around artistic concept, social commentary and mixed media presentations. As one not to shy away from innovation, Flynn is now embracing and pioneering 3D as her chosen medium of artistic communication.

This shift in Flynn's process has resulted in the creation of a highly accurate and realistic 3D replica of the designer's own physical form. This digital-double will function as Flynn's own 3D performance-art avatar.

"A challenge I have always faced in the art-direction of performance is the unavoidable reality that I cannot "see" myself. It was this restriction that refrained me from ever performing in my own works, and forced me to always collaborate with models, actors or dancers to realize the performances. Now that I have the avatar (I call her "Em"), I have the capacity to direct my own exact form, and analyse and critique my own performance. The other fascinating realization is also that Em obviously does not have a soul (yet!), meaning that I can subject her to scenarios I would never normally put myself (or any person) through. This has opened up a whole new realm to my approach to the art-work as a concept.
In addition to this, the 3D medium also has it's own other-worldly qualities which defy real-life. Em can pass through walls, change her form, colour or appearance in an unlimited number of ways. Em can take on the movement of a ballerina, a soldier or a sex worker (through the use of motion capture technology). This freedom has opened the doors to a reality which is unlike any we can fathom, and as an artistic medium, 3D is truly like no other." - Hermione Flynn

As a first look at the avatar, Flynn has created a 3D campaign "Watermark" which explores concepts of "digital make-up" as well as exposes the texture-mapping of 3D objects.

Hermione Flynn intends to produce limited edition concept-collections, which are a simple by-product of the 3D art and performances created. The introduction of 3D will also drastically inform the creative process - from cloth simulations to 3D printing, the products produced at Hermione Flynn will certainly reflect this new era.

The movement towards 3D-created content is unavoidable. It is sweeping through the entertainment, social media, advertising, VR and AI industries (to name a few), so the influence on fashion and art is now utterly inevitable. Flynn has been able to take advantage of such a movement, through the exclusive partnership with Berlin-based 3D content-creators Synthetic.Studio and sister company Mimic Productions.

"We are thrilled about this new endeavor, and look forward to sharing and creating new content in the field of performance, art and fashion. Whether it's virtual reality, animated videos or 3D stills, we will be embracing the authentic potential and unlimited possibilities of this exciting new medium." - Hermione Flynn

HERMIONE FLYNN - LAWLESS

Hermione Flynn presents a new collection 'LAWLESS'.

Berlin based designer, Hermione Flynn presents another strong concept collection 'LAWLESS'.
In line with her previous work Hermione is gaining momentum with her unique design vision and style that goes beyond trend and seasons. Recently she has showed the collection at Hyères Festival where she was one of the nominees of this prestigious annual prize. In 2016 she has won the 2nd KALTBLUT Magazine Award at FASHIONCLASH Festival.

"As technology advances exponentially, the law as we currently know it struggles to maintain authority. Physical borders have become redundant in the face of an uncontrollable, lawless digital realm. It is the prospect of “lawless-ness” which is at the heart of the new HERMIONE FLYNN concept collection."

“LAWLESS”
As a point of departure, FLYNN staged a technological experiment featuring long-term dance collaborator, Moo Kim, and the use of a 3D Sensor Motion Capture system. Through this work, FLYNN explored how the limitations of the technology and the physical body, translated onto a digital figure. The most profound result portrayed a digital figure who did not recognize the “borders” of their own “flesh” or “skin” – arms passed through the torso, legs dissected one another, the head punctuated through the shoulders…

Utilizing the imagery, FLYNN has developed a collection which features classic menswear items, yet caters to the misplacement or duplication of limbs, portraying the physical realizations of a “borderless” or “lawless” reality. With a specific focus on the Western attire of the predominantly white, male law-makers, garments such as work suits, blazers, shirts, and trench-coats have been twisted, shifted, duplicated and reversed, creating an allusion of political disturbance and disorientation.

HERMIONE FLYNN - performance fashion film KOMMEN

HERMIONE FLYNN premiered the performance fashion film KOMMEN at IKRA MADA Fashion Festival, winning the Best Concept Award.

KOMMEN is a meeting of dance, fashion and film. Directed by Ryan Fielding and Ryan Fielding conceptualised by performance artist and designer Hermione Flynn, this film embraces a spontaneous process of gesture and response. Wearing Flynn's (IN)DIFFERENCE concept collection, Moo Kim performs to no music- instead reacting against his environment, his clothing and the impulsivity of his emotions.
Ryan Fielding creates a soundtrack as equally reactive, a musical "call and response" to Kim's free and unstructured movements. As Kim simultaneously engages with and rebels against the environment and clothing he is placed in, the minimalist, brutal architecture of Berlin provides a dramatic setting to this performance fashion film.

Hermione Flynn is a designer and brand whose clientele share a passion and desire for clothing as an artistic medium, focusing on the creative concept, social commentary and unique design. Often presented alongside a performance art event or film, Flynn creates work that is thorough and socially challenging.

Hermione Flynn - FASHIONCLASH Festival 2015

HERMIONE FLYNN - (IN)DIFFERENCE

Looking back to the 7th edition FASHIONCLASH Festival is a real pleasure, especially when things collide into timeless moments. When fashion becomes more than just clothes and skips a heartbeat because we can just be who ever we want to be without looking away. When fashion places a mirror to confront us with what beauty really means. The moment when transgender model Gia Bab, divine human being, steps on the stage it always impresses. But this time it was everything and more.
Conceptual designer Hermione Flynn staged a catwalk performance with minimal but highly effective acts, expressing her collection '(In)Difference'.
Taking unisex to a a higher level this collection explores gender codes and gender inequality.

HERMIONE FLYNN - (IN)DIFFERENCE

The exploration of what defines gender, and how those differences inform gender inequality is at the heart of HERMIONE FLYNN’S new work - (IN)DIFFERENCE.
Her new collection will be presented during FASHIONCLASH Festival in Maastricht (June 11-14).

Motivated and perpetually shocked by both historical and current gender inequality, FLYNN began considering the biological and socially constructed differences between men and women, and how these inform our behaviours today. It is through analysing, dissecting and reversing some of these typically male or female visual symbols that FLYNN challenges how our history of gender determinacy has left an unnecessary residue on the current social environment, - even in apparently liberal societies. From the smallest of details to our innate biological differences, (IN)DIFFERENCE presents a multi-layered visual experience which incorporates a subtle nod, as well as an almighty shout, to the very things that define woman and man.
To celebrate the release of her new collection and online boutique, FLYNN reveals the identity of her model from the recent (IN)DIFFERENCE collaboration as Olympian female bodybuilder, Nathalie Falk. Falk, an athlete of international repute, was featured in six filmic moments that activate the gender-fusing concept of the (IN)DIFFERENCE collection. Berlin based film-maker, Shlager, and renowned Slovakian photographer Evelyn Bencicova joined Falk and FLYNN to capture the model’s unique performance, an art event that confronted gender norms by re-imagining the status and utility of the collection’s keystone garment - the (IN)DIFFERENCE apron.
