Joelle Boers at FASHIONCLASH Festival 2015

preview new collection, photo Karen Kikkert
Get to know JOELLE BOERS, who comes from the little Dutch town Geleen near Maastricht. After her studies in Graphic Design and Photography, she desired to explore the world of Fashion and Textile Design at MAFAD (Maastricht Academy Fine Arts and Design).
She has been involved in many FASHIONCLASH events and projects.
Joelle will present her debut, self-designed collection at FASHIONCLASH Festival Show Program and purchase her designs at the designer Market.
In addition she takes part at Designers in Store within festival's Side Program, her work will be presented and sold at Stijl Maastricht boutique.

How would you describe your work ? What is your technique?
From my childhood on, I had always a passion for illustrations/photography and collaging. My work is a reflection of my fascination by the aesthetics of all things: natural phenomena, technological and cultural identity. I am heavily influenced by materials and their surfaces, blending hand painting, patterns and photography, By connecting these diverse elements my label has developed a unique aesthetic. Through fabric and dexterous print design, far-reaching stories are told. Trying to show a transition from ancient cultures into a more futuristic type of beauty.

Stijl Fashion Event 2014

Stijl Fashion Event 2014

Staged in the beautiful Sint Jan Church, Stijl Maastricht organized the second edition of Stijl Fashion Eevent.  The theme and of the evening and styling was inspired by Hans Christian Andersen fairy tales. Compared with the fist edition the ambiance appeared more glamourous.
The show is a presentation of brand new FW 2014 fashion items available in Stijl stores in Maastricht. After the show fashionista's where given the opportunity to purchase their favorite looks.
The show also featured pieces by our local emerging designer Joelle Boers. It proved that young designers work can merge very well with commercial brands.

Joelle Boers & Bregje Cox at Amsterdam Fashion Week

IINUA 2014/15 collection by Joelle Boers and Bregje Cox

On Friday June 11, Joelle Boers and Bregje Cox debuted at the 21st edition of Amsterdam Fashion Week. They are not new for me, in fact I am following their careers since their studies. Both designers graduated from MAFAD (Maastricht Academy of Fine Arts and Design).
Both designers have participated in various FASHIONCLASH projects with their individual work, in fact it is also through FASHIONCLASH that they got to know each other and started working together.

" We work very well together because we complement each other. Both of us are heavily influenced by the aesthetics of all things technological, natural phenomena and cultural identity."

I was very proud to attend their show at Westergasfabriek in Amsterdam and to witness talent and their growth. The collection was not enirely new to me, as they have shown a part of it during FASHIONCLASH Festival last June, however they managed to complete the collection story and add relevant styling features. This time the whole story was complete. The collection contains a great balance, variety, innovation and wearability.
IINUA is inspired by the wisdom of the mountains and the resourcefulness of the Inuit people. The Inuit believe strongly in animism; that all people, animals and geographic features such as mountains and lakes possess a spiritual essence. They translated the structures and textures of the mountains and the stones into bold prints. For the patterns they looked at the functions that Inuit garments have. By combining elements they created a collection that could be seen as a kind of stone-camouflage.

Another feature that worth mentioning where the shoes they used in the presentation. The shoes are by designer Chris van den Elzen, who they also met at FASHIONCLASH Festival.
The EXCIDIUM shoes contain a 3d printed woodpulp hightech platform wedge with a calf leather upper and a acrylic/copper heel insert. The shoe collection features ankle booties, half booties and sandals all in black and soft grey copper details, finalized with Italian zippers. This shoes where a perfect fit for this collection.

It pleases me to see talented designers that join forces and work hard on their dreams. Well done!

Their participation at Mercedes-Benz FashionWeek Amsterdam was made possible thanks to support of Mode Maastricht (Fashion Maastricht).

Encounter with textile designer Joelle Boers

Encounter with textile designer Joelle Boers who just graduated from Academy of Fine Arts Maastricht

Joelle Boers next to her work

-Can you tell us something about your graduation project and collection?

As a child I was always fascinated by nature, that’s why I was inspired for my graduation concept by the seabirds around the “plastic soup” area’s in the Pacific Ocean, which are threatened with extinction, because of all the garbage, plastics and other toxic material that ruins the ocean and the life within,
Using my own photography, detailed with old plastics, metals and other materials, I developed my own kind of “garbage”, old wasted things that took my attention, and used them in my prints.
In my work I play with a mix of geometric shapes and weird material in a bold way. My final collection consists a book of digital printed silk fashion fabrics, a wearable fashion collection based on digital designs mixed with other materials, fashion objects and techniques.
