H O W L by Maria Glück at FASHIONCLASH Festival 2014

Meet, Maria Glück is from Bilbao, Spain, but lives in Berlin. She studied Fine Arts and specialized in sculpture. Eventually, she decided to follow the path of fashion. Her label H O W L by Maria Glück was founded in Berlin and offers menswear and womenswear with a sustainable approach.
Her collection will be presented during the fashion show program, the Designer Market and the FASHIONCLASH Side Program.

Within the FASHIONCLASH Side Program H O W L by Maria Gluck FW14-15 collection is available at Mayfair 12 - 15th of June.

Encounter with Maria Glück

What inspires you in general?
Everything! Sometimes the most unexpected things. I guess that being so much of a city-neurotic, nature references always play a big role at the beginning of my collections. This is also because I have a great attraction to raw, basic and essential materials (not necessary textiles).

What place or city do you find inspiring?
Any place, but I guess that where I live and work (Berlin) impregnates the character of how I work, and how my collections shape up. In any case, sometimes it’s a new thing that catches my eye, or a new book or city. But often it’s actually what is always there, day-to-day, which at some point gets all my attention as if I’d re-discover it.

What is it like to be a young designer in your city/country?
I find working and creating in Berlin very interesting due to the great artistic environment and the many possibilities of interaction. It is also more affordable in terms of space compared with other big European capitals. The rhythm and the calm paths of the city also help to be creative. On the other hand, it’s quite hard to make your way in a place that is still not a fashion industry city. There are certain supports, but given the difficulty of this creative field and the high costs of it, maybe not enough yet.
What attracts you about the FASHIONCLASH platform?
The amazing selection of great young fashion creators as well as the idea behind it and its character. It is such a great fashion and creative platform that should not be missed by any means.

What is the concept behind your latest collection?
Pure materials combined with ‘wood embroidery’ in designs that feature birds’ migration.

Describe you collection in three words: Minimal, Conceptual, Sustainable

Your collection is called "Nomadic Collection". What inspired you for this collection?
I went to watch birds migrate on a tour outside Berlin. I learned that birds fly away to the South not to escape from the cold but due to the lack of light. These birds’ migration images (sky prints) and the idea of total light (white) and total dark (black) shaped the collection.

Did you always want to work in the field of fashion?
No, even if I was always attracted to it, I always neglected certain things of the industry. I was more driven to Art, particularly sculpture and video/photo. But given how I feel while working in my fashion-designs, maybe I should understand that my artistic drive was a meta-construction and I always wanted to do fashion…

Can you remember the first piece you designed?
I remember making some pieces for my dolls when I was a kid, out of my mothers’ fabric leftovers (she is a seamstress). Then I remember making a black dress in my sculpture class at Art school.

Do you have a muse? If yes, who is it and why?
Yes, ha ha! It is Christian Carlsen. He is not my muse in terms of “I would love to dress him”, but he is my inspiration because of our walks and challenging conversations. I guess he helps me to bring out my own concepts by discussing other concepts.

What is on your playlist when you are working?
Very minimal Jazz. That is my favourite music to work on. Essential instruments, some trumpet, a “silence with sound” kind of thing.

Who is your favourite fashion designer?
Hard to say, I have many favourite designers that I admire for different reasons. The more I discover designers and their work, the more I broaden my admiration. This also happens with cinema directors and artists, but surely I admire more those whose work motivates me to keep on working and creating.

What has been the greatest experience in your career so far?
I guess doing fashion shows is a great emotional experience, and it’s a group work. They represent everything: the most exciting moments and the most terrifying ones.

What can we expect from you in the future?
More artistic fashion shows displays; new fabrics, materials and combinations; a development on my style; artistic and group collaborations.

Stijl Fashion Event in Maastricht

Yesterday I attended the Stijl Fashion Event at SAM decorfabriek in Maastricht. It was nice for change to attend an event that is actually not orginized by us (FASHIONCLASH).
Stijl Fashion Event is initiated by Stijl Maastricht, which is a one of the better stores in Maastricht. There are two stores, Stijl Maastricht and Stijl Wyck. This fashion event was a celebration of the 5th anniversary of Stijl Maastricht and 1st anniversary of Stijl Wyck. Stijl is known for representation of sophisticated Scandinavian fashion brands like Won Hundred, Tiger of Sweden, Selected Femme but also Dutch labels like StudioRUIG, Land and The Boyscouts.
The show was elegant and the whole event very well organized. It is clear why Stijl is successful and this show proves another smart move in client engagement.
On the other side, this kind of events are positive happenings in the context of 'Maastricht Modestad' development. Having said that, there is still a long way to go for Maastricht.

Congratulations to Stijl!

Glenda Lagomarsino at FASHIONCLASH Maastricht 2012

Glenda Lagomarsino is a 22 year old designer from a little town near Florence called Borgo San Lorenzo. She graduated from Polimoda, International Institute of Fashion Design and Marketing, in a triennial course of fashion design.
She showed her collection at FASHIONCLASH Maastricht 2012 and made an impression.
"For this collection I was inspired by the people of Papua New Guinea, the last population of cannibals. I'm fascinated by the volumes of Shamans and by the importance women give to the head to support their clothes. My collection focuses a great deal on these waves. Many dresses in this collection are intertwined. I've studied the position that women take in some photos; taking this position, they change their silhouettes, they change their body, and I changed the proportion."

The concept of her new collection is based on insects.
"I went a step further with exploring fashion sculptures; costumes are revived and have received a variety of colors with insects inspired prints. The collection seeks to be a representation of moving sculptures. Futuristic and a minimalistic form with oversized shapes which are straight, strong, and simplified geometrical."

Joyful Opening of SALON/Maastricht

Today it was a sunny June 2nd and not just because of the weather but because of the opening of SALON/Maastricht and the kick off for 10 wonderful days to come in Maastricht.
With our very own FASHIONCLASH Maastricht (8,9 and 10th of June), Maastricht is for sure a fashion town.
SALON/Maastricht is a special route through Maastricht where both young/up-and-coming talent and established designers and artists present their work on special locations spread through the city.
The route and the opening happend on a very unique location, the central station of Maastricht. Most people probably don't even know it but it is a pearl of location to showcase art. The attic of the station consists of beautiful rooms with nice light that shines through stained glass windows to the inside. And there it happend, the opening of SALON/Maastricht.
Enjoy the images but I suggest you to go and see it, the doors are open until the 10th of June.
Soon more posts!

MOQUI MARBLES A/W 2012/13 by Ingo Binder

Last weekend Maastricht based fashion designer Ingo Binder presented his new collection for fall 2012/13 in Marres.
The collection was presented in an intimate setting with candlelight and live music. The collection and the atmosphere clearly refer to 'western' inspiration. It was very difficult to see the clothing in this presentation. There were slim tailored pants, coats, jackets and blouses. Striking were the big scarves with prints at some outfits. The collection is build up in matt colors like green gray and brown. In general the collection is very wearable, with basic and classic menswear.
It is a nice collection but maybe a bit too wearable.  I missed some typical Ingo Binder outfits. The presentation seemed more outspoken than the collection, so Im looking forward for the showroom to see the detail.
I follow the work of Ingo Binder for a several years now, he is one of of the few designers in Maastricht that is building up a label. He has participated at FASHIONCLASH Maastricht and with his graduation collection he was selected for Lichting 2010. After Amsterdam Fashion Week and London Fashion Week it was very nice to see a low budget or rather say 'no-budget' fashion show in my hometown. Keep up the good work Ingo!

If you have not seen the show you can go to the showroom.

Ingo Binder Showroom is at the temporary showroom at SCOPE 13.
Thursday, 15tth March 11 am - 6 pm until Sunday, 25th March 12 - 6 pm
