Opening WinterSALON / 2014

Frowijn & Tilanus Atelier
On Sunday, January 26, SALON/ had its 14th salon event opening in three years. The Winter/SALON 2014 kick off opening took place at Porsthoornkerk.
Manon Schaap and Gijs Stork, the initiators of SALON stated that their mission with SALON is to create intimate settings for dialogues, presentations and to show the stories behind the work.  They aim to be a showcase of the process behind art and design instead of just showing the finished work.
The multidisciplinary installations at Posthoornkerk expressed this approach with a variety of work by talents from Design Academy Eindhoven, Collectie Arnhem 2014 by Artez students and my personal highlight, the work of Aaltje Kramer. Kramer presented her 'Fashion Without Images' project where she translated fashion editorials into words and poetry. She invites the audience to use their immagination.
Opera singer Imara Thomas performed within the 'youasme measyou' installation and in addition there is an interesting installation by Conny Groenewegen & Frans-Pieter Vonck, Berber Soepboer.

I have also visited Lensvelt location where you can see work by Frowijn&Tilanus Atelier, Sander Wassink Ma'ayan Pesach and Marga Weimans.

Frowijn&Tilanus Atelier is a collaboration of two very talented designers who graduation collections where noticed and awarded. Liselore Frowijn won Frans Molenaar Couture Award 2013 and Henriëtte Tilanus won G-Star Raw Lichting 2013 Award. Recently she won the People's Price at H&M Award 2014. Keep your eyes on this two designers!

Furthermore there are many presentations and events during WinterSALON / 2014  that is taking place until February 9 in Amsterdam.

Vlisco Unfolded

For the first time ever, Vlisco took part at the Dutch Design Week. With Vlisco Unfolded, the company unveiled exciting insights and stories. From the 167 year old history to the latest collaboration with Studio Job. From the latest collection to the launch of a new line of products: Vlisco Unfolded provides an insight into the unique world of Vlisco.

Vlisco is a Dutch textile company based in Helmond.
Vlisco was founded in 1846 and its signature fabrics, made using a 21-stage process involving wax-based batik techniques, soon found favour in Africa, where they were bartered by Dutch traders en route to Indonesia, which was the intended market.
The company started to develop bold, colourful prints for African customers and today has a symbiotic relationship with the region, where its products have become part of local folklore.
Vlisco, together with fabric brands it owns in Ghana and the Ivory Coast, produced 65 million yards of fabric in 2012. Its key markets are Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Central African Republic and Democratic Republic of Congo, as well as central and west African customers in major cities around the world.
The Vlisco Group, which employs 2,700 people worldwide, was bought in 2010 by British investment group Actis, which plans to help the brand double its business by 2015. It had a turnover of €225 million in 2011, an increase of 20% on the previous year.

Beside the insight in the world behind the company this inspiring exhibition was very well staged.
Stylist Maarten Spruyt and Tsur Reshef worked together closely with Visco's creative director Roger Gerards to unfold the Vlisco story.
In addition the exhibition contains work by photographers and stylists Freudenthal & Verhagen, photographer Koen Hauser, photographer Barrie Hullegie, fashion designer Harvey Bouterse, international design studio Studio Job, fashion designer  Marga Weimans, communication & design agency DieTwee and Togolese fashion designer Timothée.

Marga Weimans - Body Archive collection

Marga Weimans had the honour to close down the 18th edition of Amsterdam Fashion Week in style with her new couture collection called Body Archive. The collection is a mixture of fashion, art and technology.

"DNA is how you really are, what you truly believe and what your unique shape is."

Marga Weimans uses these words in the intro film that is projected before the show.
On the background screen of the catwalk we see flickering computer DNA a la The Matrix. In this conceptual collection models are wearing huge cubes, leggings, short dresses and we see colorful graphic prints which were based on her own DNA code.
Hate it or love it, Marga Weimans is pushing the boundaries of fashion. I have always been intrigued by her work.

Mattijs van Bergen presentation at Salon Maastricht
Mattijs van Bergen is the big winner at Dutch Fashion Awards 2012. He won the International Fashion Incubator Award 2012 and the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Award tonight in The Hague.
Hyun Yeu won the Dutch Fashion Incubator Award 2012. The Dutch Fashion Icon Femme and Homme awards went to Liesbeth in’t Hout and Carlo Wijnands.

During this evening there were more awards, the Cultuurfonds Mode Stipendium 2013 was presented. A cheque for the sum of 50.000 euro went to sisters Truus and Riet Spijkers from label Spijkers en Spijkers.
This grant, initiated in 2011 by an anonymous benefactor and included in the Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds, consists of an amount of 50.000 euro and a passed on trophy. This oeuvre-injection enables the chosen designer to develop himself on a business as well as an artistic level. The Cultuurfonds Mode Stipendium was presented for the first time in 2011 to fashion designer Ilja Visser. Francisco van Benthum received the Cultuurfonds Mode Stipendium 2012 in March of this year.

The annual Dutch Fashion Awards is a celebration moment for Dutch fashion. It is a ‘bullet time’ scene starring the best of Dutch fashion, created to assemble the Dutch fashion field and to boost innovative design. The Dutch Fashion Awards call the attention of the international fashion industry to the highest level of Dutch fashion talent and connects fashion creativity with commerce.

WinterSALON at Ons' Lieve Heer op Solder Museum

Another memorable presentation during 2012 edition of winterSALON is at Museum Ons' Lieve Heer op Solder (Our Lord in the Attic).
Our Lord in the Attic is one of the oldest and most remarkable museums in Amsterdam. Behind the characteristic facade of the house by the canal lies a largely original 17th-century home and a complete hidden church. This hidden church 'in the attic' was built during the Reformation, when Catholics were forbidden to hold public services.
