Sphinxpark is open!

image: Peter Visser
Sphinxpark, a brand new temporary park in Maastricht, just around the corner of my studio, was officially opened on May 26th. I love it! Too bad it is just temporary. In collaboration with NAiM/Bureau Europa and REcentre, platform for sustainable design in the Meuse-Rhine Euregion, Marres Projects realized a temporary park in the inner city of Maastricht in 2011 and 2012.

This temporary free haven for innovation aspires to be exemplary for the manner in which the Euregion might deal with the interim in times of population decline and economic crisis. The area is part of the so-called ‘Belvédère Plan’, a master plan for the redevelopment of a large part of Maastricht. In 1999, the architect Frits Palmboom presented the plans for a new residential area on the Sphinx terrain and their realization started in 2004. However, due to the economic crisis, many urban development projects have encountered delays and postponement. The Belvédère terrain in Maastricht is also facing these problems, with the consequence that various plans are either delayed or subject to a reassessment. Amongst others, this has led to a situation in which an already serviced plot will remain undeveloped for years to come. Behind the historic walls of this former industrial area, a desolate wilderness has emerged over the past two years, creating the ideal conditions to address the question of the park of the future. Centrally situated, enclosed and featuring a rugged beauty, this walled area presents the ideal environment for a temporary park; the Sphinxpark.

Pyuupiru 2001-2008

Last week (17th May) there was a screening of Pyuupiru 2001-2008 in Lumiere Maastricht.
The screening is part of Out of Fashion-Maastricht edition exhibition.
http://www.bureau-europa.nl/

An intimate portrait of the phenomenon Pyuupiru. A visual artist whose body is the heart of his work, he undergoes a difficult sex change operation. Filmed by Matsunaga, a talented director and dear friend of Pyuupiru, this is a must see for everyone who's interested in art and fashion.

Trailer

A beautiful and enchanting female face is given make-up. It’s the Japanese artist Pyuupiru: neither man nor woman - and both at once.
From 2001, when eccentric Japanese visited clubs in absurdist costumes, Pyuupiru was followed by friend and filmmaker Matsunaga. Pyuupiru’s handmade creations, that he/she sketches intuitively yet acurately, are becoming known in art circles. People are impressed by Pyuupiru’s manga-like pink giants and beautiful but confrontational self-portraits about identity. Yet behind this talented (wo)man is a sometimes deeply unhappy soul. Pyuupiru’s hormone therapy and a major sex-change operation are responsible for an emotional rollercoaster, and the quest for love is difficult.

Matsunaga followed his friend Pyuupiru for eight years. Beautiful shots of theatrical creations are juxtaposed with intimate, emotional moments. For instance, when Pyuupiru’s heart is broken. And when he/she realises he/she is being taken seriously as an artist. Matsunaga lovingly follows the transformation of an artist and a person.

Out of Fashion: Maastricht Edition

Last weekend, Saturday 14 May, the exhibition 'Out of Fashion: Maastricht Edition' was opened in NaiM/Bureau Europa.
Before the official opening there was a performance by Painted Series 'Painted Game'.

Guus Beumer and Eve-Marie Kuistermans

The programme for Out of Fashion – Maastricht Edition consists of an exhibition, a film programme and a series of events on the interaction between fashion and film. This project demonstrates how fashion houses, avant-garde designers and young, still unknown fashion designers make use of film, video and online media to shape, distribute and sell their designs and vision.
For more information on activities during Out of Fashion – Maastricht Edition: www.bureau-europa.nl or my Out of Fashion blogpost.

Here is a short selection of exhibited works.
There is more to see and it's very worth to visit! 'Out of Fashion: Maastricht Edition' is open until 26th of June 2011.

Maison Martin Margiela has a long history when it comes to film as a means of presentation. In this exhibition Maison Martin Margiela shows several men's and women's shows and presentations from 1993-2011.

Painted Game

At the opening of 'Out of Fashion:Maastricht Edition' in NAiM/Bureau Europa, Saturday 14 May, Painted presented their recent and previous work with a performance 'Painted Game'. For this performance Painted collaborated with students from the Toneelacademie Maastricht.

Painted is a collective led by Saskia van Drimmelen, Margreet Sweerts and Desirée Hammen.
They believe in the strength of collaboration. They work together with masters in nearly forgotten crafts like needlepoint lace from Bulgaria and beadwork of the Assiniboine tribe from Northern America. By sharing knowledge and the joy of making, traditional techniques breathe new life.
