Serbia Fashion Week SS 2017

Neo Design
The spring/summer 2017 edition of Serbia Fashion Week took place in from November 7 - 12 in Novi Sad, the recently elected Cultural Capital of Europe for 2021.
With this new future perspective Serbia Fashion Week seems to have a more stable marriage with the city of Novi Sad.
Mrs. Svetlana Horvat has managed to settle a platform for fashion designers in Serbia and the Balkan region but has also made connections globally. Thank to partnerships with many fashion weeks from all over the globe she has created new paths for Serbian designers, in addition a selective group of relevant media has been accommodated during the event.
The schedule of the event features an extensive program with fashion shows of emerging and renowned designers from Serbia and abroad. But there is more to see and do; there are seminars, talks, showrooms and fashion film screenings.
Following the previous editions, the opening show again the hands of Srđan Šveljo, the Novi Sad based stylist and editor who curated a show based on Oscar Wilde. Under the title 'Heroes with Oscar Wilde' he gathered work of 25 menswear designers.
Following highlight of the fashion week is the young designers contest - the EFTDC (international designers ) and the FTDC (serbian designers). The winner of the FTDC, Neo Design by the promosing designer Nevena Ivanović won participation in the coming FASHIONCLASH Festival. Other finalists from Serbia where Jelena Đukanović and Katarina Romčević. International finalists where Polona Roblek and Nina Grubek from Slovenia and Strangelove from Belarus by designers Marina Smalygova and Victoria Tkacheva.

Strangelove
Following days the program varied in styles, international and local names, but also in quality. Among the favorites was Catch Michelle from Romania who surprised with her quirky surrualist collection, the colorful and arty brand Sarah Jessy Jones from Argentina and outspoken Betaomega from Czech Republic.
Betaomega
The local designers that impressed the most was Vasilije Kovačev, in particular with his menswear pieces. Ana Vasiljević presented a descent casual but creative collection that stood out with its minimalism besides all the womenswear that mostly contains eveningwear and gowns.
Furthermore worth mentioning where designers Bata Spasojević, Mladen Milovjević Baron, Zvonko Marković, Marta Miljanić and Bosko Jakovljevic.
Mad Mood Milano
Last but not least - if I may say so myself - was my own collection 'Best of Both Worlds'. It was a great honor that Serbia Fashion Week gave me the stage to show my work in my birth country. In particular because my work has always been inspired by my former Yugoslav roots and experiences.

Serbia Fashion Week S/S 2016

Ean Williams
Serbia Fashion Week, spring summer 2016 edition took place from November 10-16 in the charming city of Novi Sad in Serbia.
An extensive schedule staged 70 designers from all over the world making it one of the biggest fashion events in South East Europe. In general this approach of SFW to create an international gathering of designers makes it interesting to attend. This edition new collaborations have been signed, completing the list of 24 fashion week/events partners. Having said that one would expect that displayed designers are the best of the best. That is not always the case, however here I will focus more on the designers worth mentioning.
Looking back to exactly a year ago, when I attended for the first time it is more than evident to see that SFW has made huge steps and grown in many ways. Bigger venue, more designers and better designers, younger and more fashionable audience etc.
SFW opening party took place on Tuesday evening and it seems that I have missed one of the highlights. Titled 'Heroes', the stylist Srdjan Sveljo curated a collective show with many emerging designers from Serbia and the region. It is exactly the young generation of designers that should be staged because they represent the fresh ideas coming from Serbia, like designers Sonja Jocic, Ivana Murišić or Mona Lacko. Another highlight in the programme where the FDTC Fashion Design Talent Competition and EFDTC Fashion Design Talent Competition that showcased young designers from Serbia and abroad. Winning designer Ivana Mišić is invited to be part of FASHIONCLASH Festival 2016.
Ivana Mišić, winner FTDC
International guest designers who showed interesting collections where the promising Greek designer Marios Karavasilis, Slovenian knitwear brand Draž, FASHIONCLASH representative Flora Miranda, and Maltese designer Ritienne Zammit. Renown Agatha Ruiz de la Prada from Spain provided the most joyous and colorful show on the closing night. Paris based designer Sandrine Philippe was the absolute highlight of this edition. She was awarded best International Designers.
Next to all the international names many Serbian designers where given the stage. Evening wear and gowns still seem to be the favorite thing for most of them. Several established Serbian designers presented more urban and casual ready-to-wear collections such as Boško Jakovljević, Bata Spasojević Individual and Mladen Milivojević Baron. These where the more memorable shows coming from local heroes of the fashion week.
It was nice to be in Novi Sad again. The organization team and the lovely volunteers made me feel very welcome.
Serbia Fashion Week is growing to become a relevant destinations in the fashion calendar, in the meantime I am curios to see what steps will be made.

Serbia Fashion Week

Impressions & Best of Serbia Fashion Week SS 2015

Situated in Serbia second largest city Novi Sad, Serbia Fashion Week is a new name on the fashion week calendar.
This was not the first time I was in Serbia, in fact I have lived in Belgrade for some years before arrival in The Netherlands. However I have never really visited Novi Sad.
I attended Serbia Fashion Week on behalf of FASHIONCLASH. We have signed an official cooperation agreement that includes exchange of emerging designers. Within this context Serbia Fashion Week selected FASHIONCLASH Festival 2014 participant Plùs Que Ma Vìe by Andrea Lazzari. Next to Andrea also Serbian designer Marko Marosiuk presented his collection. My task was to be part of the jury and to award one of the finalists of Fashion Talent Design Competition. Zorica Jadranski won participation at FASHIONCLASH Festival 2015.

Serbia Fashion Week is initiated by Mrs. Svetlana Horvat with aim to promote Serbian designers on an international scale. The event was for sure international. Representatives from various countries have been invited to show their collections and in return each of the countries will invite Serbian designers. Mrs. Horvat mentioned that cooperations with 16 fashion weeks (organizations) are installed. Great thing about Serbia Fashion Week is also the support they offer to designers, all designers are invited to show for free. Next to that there is attention for new generation designers and fashion design students.
So what was on the schedule during Serbia Fashion Week? Next to FASHIONCLASH designers there where pretty much all names I never heard of and there was loads of womenswear, gowns and lace dresses. But was it 'fashion', in some cases not really as it did not went further than cheap Eastern European aesthetic. However lets focus on designers worth mentioning starting with fashion design student Zorica Jadranski that won FTDC. Zvonko Markovic presented a classy collection all in blacks, Ivana Đurić presented a collection that felt complete with the right styling, collection by Polish brand Malgrau featured some refined clean looks and Florin Dobre gave a great show with his fresh menswear collection.  Famous Serbian designer Verica Rakocevic presented a small selection of her collection featuring some nice looks.
They seemed to have saved the best for last as the closing show of the French designer Eymeric Francois was a display of another level.
For me highlight of SFW was the installation by designer Natasa Saric and the exhibition of Thomas Devaux.
Serbia Fashion Week closed with Serbia Fashion Awards that where broadcasted live on RTV Pink in Serbia. There where actually 16 awards to be given out; winner of best international collection was Florin Dobre from Romania, best Serbian collection went for the second time to Zvonko Markovic, and best emerging designer Ivana Đurić.  I had the honor the present the award for best male model to Stefan Mijailovic.
Serbia Fashion Week has room for improvement, especially when it comes to curation and programme of designers but I do believe that this new festival will develop in years to come. The event is organized by passionate team and assisted by many volunteers. During my stay I had a very pleasant stay at Dash Star Hotel, enjoyed diners, lunches and parties, met some very nice people and got to know Novi Sad (at least a bit more).
