TVDB - FASHIONCLASH Festival 2019

Tom Van der Borght has a history of leaving impressions at FASHIONCLASH Festival. This year was no different. In fact, his impressive show earned him the FASHIONCLASH Festival 2019 Talent award and the Clash Show Public Award.
Currently at a master programme at Toneelacademie Maastricht, Tom is a multi-talented transdisciplinary artist playing with the boundaries of fashion, art, illustration and performance. In his ongoing artistic research process, he goes on a quest to challange normativity. Being queer and disabled himself, intersectionality is at the core of his work. With his peresentation at FASHIONCLASH Festival he explored the performative elements further. Hi impressed not only with the performance but also with the craftsmanship and the layered narrative.

"Our technology-based society is built on likes, and sharing “our happy life”. We deal with negative things in solitude. In such moments we crave for connection and community as an antidote for loneliness and exclusion. TVDB develops a series of 7 rituals in search for new ways of collectivity, based on 7 stages of his own life. This research explores non-normative bodies on the intersection of fashion, performance and visual art. The first ritual of 7, Act 01: a Safe Cocoon is a low-tech procession that explores the tension between wearing and being worn, between carrying and being carried. 7 outfits are created out of 7 materials. 7 is and will always be a magic number."

COC is ALL, COC is LOVE, will KILL for COC!

Personal, daring and stunning COC 'Church of Chica' collection by Tom Van der Borght. The collection was presented during the first edition of Berlin Fashion Film Festival.

The main inspiration for this collection was manipulation. More specifically the aim was to create the image and illusion of a cult, as it symbolises manipulation in it's most extreme way. Looking for an icon to build the cult around, I ended up with my own dog, Chica. The Church of Chica was born. When you flip around the word "dog", it becomes "god".  So i found the perfect reason to make my rescued mixed breed dog, lookin as an anti-hero,  the symbol of a new found path to happiness (and finally destruction). The collection tells the story how a cult works: starting from love, softness and positive images, going over brainwashing and fear and ending in total mania, terrorism, destruction. Worship will rescue us all. As i was very much influenced by ancient Mexican artwork and narci street fashion, the look of the collection is one of a Neon-Indians tribe, warriors of the light.

On a more personal level, this collection tells my very own story: through artwork and self developped
prints some major elements of my identity are displayed. Not only the use of my very own dog as an icon,
but also the choice of printing microscopic images of the heriditary muscular disease i'm suffering from
myself, on the outside of clothes, are giving a deeper insight in my oovercome/manipulate difficult parts of my own life into strengths.

In a way u could say the whole collection is an encouragment to more self-worship and connection with our own selves.

Tom Van der Borght is based in GENT, Belgium but he's roots are in Bilzen (Limburg - Belguim). He studied at Stedelijke Academie Voor Schone Kunsten Sint Niklaas. His collections are produced in Belgium.

First edition of Berlin Fashion Film Festival

Report, text and impression images are by Anne-Luise Gerlach

It’s here again - The time of Fashion Weeks all around the globe. This week the Berlin Fashion Week started and on this occasion Berlin Fashion Film Festival 2012 was initiated. The first edition of Berlin Fashion Film Festival was kicked off yesterday, 3rd of July, with the official screenings of the finalists and I had the pleasure of going and experiencing it firsthand.

Berlin Fashion Film Festival presents fashion in an innovative way, combining film with fashion presentations, whilst grouping together outstanding film directors, emerging fashion talent and influential characters of the international creative scene. A selection of fashion films, curated by Vogue.it, Esmod Berlin, Sugarhigh, FIER management, and Furore, and additionally selected through an online open call were screened and awarded according to different categories.
The categories were assessed by an international jury, which included Diane Pernet for Best Fashion Film, Yann Le Goec for Best Fashion, Johan Renck for Best Cinematography, Till Diestel for Best Idea, and Oliver Koletzki for Best Music.
Berlin Fashion Film Festival returns fashion to its creative origins, supporting emerging talent by exploring fashion through cinema. It is simply an alternative and refreshing way of seeing fashion in a different context.
