Jamaican porn stars models for Hood by Air

PH & HBA
Shayne Olivier’s latest project is a cooperation with South African photographer Pieter Hugo, capturing the latest Hood by Air collection on Jamaican porn stars. The arresting images are also the subject of a new book.
Pieter Hugo got in the picture with his magnificent images of African communities, ranging from Nigerian gangs walking their pet hyenas to Liberian scouts, via judges in Botswana. For Hood by Air, he captured Jamaican porn stars from Kingston’s Gully Queen gay community, a group of men who ostracized by the patriarchal society in the country, who now live together near a storm drain in the city’s slum district. Sex workers, porn actor and transsexuals all wear Hood by Air in PH & HBA, a poignant and transgressive book available now.

Fashion is Nuts!

Donald Robertson’s book Fashion is Nuts!
Henson had his puppets, Warhol had his soup cans, and now illustrator Donald Robertson has his walnuts!
Many people have come to view the fashion world as elitist, and unapproachable, but what everyone seems to forget is… Fashion is nuts! Whether it’s Edie Campbell dressed in nothing but body paint and a headdress, or Iris Apfel sitting front row wearing her signature glasses and dressed in red fur, fashion is, and has always been wondrously mad. http://fashionisnuts.com/

Heavenly Bodies: Cult Treasures & Spectacular Saints from the Catacombs

Unbelievable Skeletons Unearthed From The Catacombs Of Rome

Back in 1578 came the fascinating discovery of a network of labyrinthine tombs, deep beneath the street of Rome. The tombs were home to the decayed skeletons of early Christian martyrs – believed to be saints on account of their bravery & unwavering support of Christian beliefs.

Many of these skeletons (given the name ‘The Catacomb Saints’ by those who first discovered them) were then distributed across Europe (predominantly Germany) as replacements for the countless holy relics which had been smashed, stolen or destroyed during the Protestant Reformation.

Once delivered, each skeleton was then clothed and adorned into a variety of precious jewels, expensive cloth, crowns, armour and even given wigs. They were put on display inside their designated churches as a reminder to all who visited, for the riches and wealth that awaited them post death – providing they swore allegiance to the Christian faith.

So fascinated by the discovery and indeed the story behind ‘The Catacomb Saints’ art historian (& self-confessed relic hunter) Paul Koudounaris travelled all over Europe trying to find and document the status of each Saint. Amazingly many of the skeletons were yet to be put on display, still stored in containers waiting to be dressed and revealed to the public.

His book 'Heavenly Bodies: Cult Treasures & Spectacular Saints from the Catacombs' looks at the gripping origins and history of ‘The Catacomb Saints’, posing such as questions as who were they? How exactly did they die? And why had they laid forgotten in Europe’s religious institutions for so long? His work serves as a compelling documentation of some of the most elaborate & forgotten relics from a by-gone era.

Hungry Planet: What the World Eats

Ever wondered what's on family dinner tables around the globe?

I discover this amazing project at Łódź Design Festival 2013.

Peter Menzel and Faith D’Aluisio traveled the world documenting that most basic of human behaviors — what we eat. Their project, “Hungry Planet,” depicts everything that an average family consumes in a given week–and what it costs — laid out in thought provoking detail.

Hungry Planet: What the World Eats
30 Families, 24 Countries, 600 Meals

In Hungry Planet, Peter Menzel and Faith D'Aluisio present a photographic study of families from around the world, revealing what people eat during the course of one week. Each family's profile includes a detailed description of their weekly food purchases; photographs of the family at home, at market, and in their community; and a portrait of the entire family surrounded by a week's worth of groceries.
To assemble this remarkable comparison, Menzel and D'Aluisio traveled to twenty-four countries and visited thirty families from Bhutan and Bosnia to Mexico and Mongolia. Accompanied by an insightful foreword by Marion Nestle, and provocative essays from Alfred W. Crosby, Francine R. Kaufman, Corby Kummer, Charles C. Mann, Michael Pollan, and Carl Safina, the result of this journey is a 30-course documentary feast: captivating, infuriating, and altogether fascinating.

Prince Claus Awards 2012

Prince Constantijn presenting the award
Prince Claus Fonds Awards were presented today (on the social media bespoke date of 12.12.12) at Citizens' Hall of the Royal Palace Amsterdam. I found my self surrounded among 450 very distinguished guests.
Her Majesty Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands along with Their Royal Highnesses Prince Willem-Alexander of Oranje and Princess Maxima of the Netherlands, Prince Constantijn and Princess Laurentien, and Princess Mabel attended the 2012 Prince Claus Awards.
The recipient of the 2012 Prince Claus Awards. went to the Argentine non-profit publishing house, Eloísa Cartonera. The company produces:
“… handmade books made of recycled materials. The materials are collected by Cartoneros, or “cardboard people” who are unemployed and survived Argentina’s political and economic collapse in 2001. Drawn to Eloísa Cartonera’s social solidarity, emerging and established Latin American writers donated their short stories, novels and other forms of literature to the company. The collective, small-scale method produces books that are cheaper than conventional paperbacks.”

Pride & Glory: The Rockers’ Jacket

Acclaimed and award-winning photographer Horst A. Friedrichs captured today‘s spirit of the rockers‘ jacket with Pride & Glory: The Rockers’ Jacket.

First coming into its own as functional outerwear and later as a symbol of youth rebellion in the 1950s – the leather biker jacket continues to fascinate as much for its beauty as its mythology. James Dean wore one, as did Marlon Brando and Dennis Hopper. Since then, the myth has continued to flourish, so that, to this day, leather jackets are one of the few outfits with true cult status. They have soul. They have character and they are worn with pride; they are painted, embellished, embroidered and enhanced with studs and patches.

Since decades, Lewis Leathers, the legendary British manufactory for leather motorcycle jackets, has brought together especially attractive and exceptional examples for their unique and comprehensive collection of vintage leather jackets. The photos by Horst A. Friedrichs make these available to the larger public for the first time and provide authentic insight into this highly exceptional lifestyle.

Antony and the Johnsons - 'Swanlight' book

Yesterday I finally got it, the "Swanlights' book with artworks of Antony Hegarty.

Swanlights, the forthcoming album from New York-based collective Antony and the Johnsons, is something of a masterpiece. Not only is it perhaps the most emotionally wide-ranging collection of songs that frontman Antony Hegarty has ever penned, it’s also a philosophical treatise, beautifully contextualized by the 144-page art book that accompanies the CD release—a selection of which we exclusively preview today. The book collects 152 collages and drawings that the musician has been working on since 2007, a period in which he was writing and recording music for the new record as well as songs that would constitute 2009’s The Crying Light. Incorporating contemporary and archaic newspaper cuttings, aged photographs, illustrations and pages from books, which have been variously overpainted, scrawled upon and dissected. The works, says Hegarty, explore an “evolving relationship with the world around me, both in feeling more part of it in my own way and in an awareness that I have a real impact on it.” So in a series entitled “Cut Away the Bad,” he removes unpleasant imagery from photographs of catastrophes, or in works such as The Creek (For My Father) embellishes natural landscapes with ebullient illustrations. “It seemed audacious to me,” he says of the art book/album release concept, “but I ended up trying to do it because I had such conviction about the emotional resonance of the pictures. The landscapes felt very true to me.”

The picture of Dorian Gray

'The Picture of Dorian Gray' by Oscar Wilde 1980

Lately I have been reading, well it's a huge news from my side, because I'm not that fond of reading. But there are few books that I wanted to read and I actually liked. I'm familiar with Oscar Wilde, his famous qoutes and his influence on style. In the 19th century he introduced style trough literature.
The book is really inspiring and intelligent, but though written in the 19th century it is so modern.

Recently I discoverd that there is a new movie called 'Dorian Gray', based on the novel.
You should judge for your self but after reading this great novel the movie is really a dissapointment.
