Gerrit Rietveld Academie - Fashion Show 2019

Emma Tornsteinrud
On Saturday 8 June 2019, the fashion department of the Gerrit Rietveld Academy presented "Fashion Show 2019", containing the graduation collections of a new group of designers and a selection from the work of first- and second-year fashion students.
The venue of the show this year was the vacant Tripolis complex designed by Aldo van Eyck, located on the edge of the Zuidas in Amsterdam.
Fashion Show 2019 presented the results of personal and experimental learning processes of students Laetitzia Campbell, Erika Jonasson, Karis Lindelien, Mika Perlmutter, Bodil Ouédraogo, Emma Tornsteinrud and Krystian Sokolowski who cooperated with graphic design student Vincent Ludwig.
They offer challenging visions on the medium of fashion with a sense of the contemporary and the visionary. They relate to their diverse cultural backgrounds and question Western reality and identity. Especially the proposals that discuss and open up the complexity of today's society made an impression.

Antwerp Fashion Show 2017

Sanan Gasanov
The Fashion department at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts held its traditional year-end show on 2 and 3 June. The highly anticipated fashion show is the must-see event where fashion enthusiasts and industry professionals from Belgium and abroad can discover the latest fashion talents.

The Antwerp Fashion department is considered one of the most important and influential fashion schools in the world and known for being the breeding ground for fashion talent. The famous ‘Antwerp Six’ (Walter Van Beirendonck, Dries Van Noten, Marina Yee, Dirk Van Saene, Dirk Bikkembergs and Ann Demeulemeester) and Martin Margiela graduated from institute at the beginning of the 1980s. The list continues with Haider Ackermann, Kris Van Assche, Raf Simons, Demna Gvasalia and so on.

The 4-hour show that took place at Park Spoor Noord is a spectacular explosion of creativity. The show starts with experimental creations in the first year. Followed by the magical ethnical and historical costumes and promising 2nd year students such as Brendon Wen, Yelizaveta Volosovska and Marie Martens. The show continues with the 3rd year bachelor collections from designers such as Asha Swillens, Quinten Mestdagh and Noa Kapchitz.

Asha Swillens

Marta Twarowska
The class of 2017 is the biggest group of Master students to date, 18 designers presented their master collections and undoubtedly some of them will make it in the industry. One to remember is Rushemy Botter already got noticed at VFILES in New York last year after he went viral because of Young Thug who wore one of his looks. Marta Twarowska's collection is inspired by her growing up in the post-communist Poland. The masks she designed for the styling made it onto this year's show campaign.

Ken Boonsong Thaodee designed a collection out of paper and cardboard, re-interpreting silhouettes of the 50's and 60's couture. With this colletion he questioned the value of a garment. 'The things we make in the class cost a lot of time, work and money, but at the end of the year, when everything is finished, everything you make just ends up hanging in a closet at home. Only for a very short period of time, we attach a certain meaning to those pieces. I wondered: what if clothing was less strong and durable, what if clothing was more fragile?'

Woojic Jo
Iuliia Gulina presented 'My Angel Likes It Rough' collection with striking masks looking like the models came out the Avatar movie. For the prints she collaborated with the designer German Lavrovsky.

Woojic Jo
presented a well-tailored menswear collection with a twist of humor. Being a fan of Mt Bean, the starting point for the collection 'Bean's tailoring' was the question he asked, 'What if Mr Bean were a tailor?'. One of the striking looks contains a giant turkey-shaped tweed mask accompanied with an English-cut suit.

Sander Bos proposal was a womenswear collection 'Dames' ('ladies' in Dutch), a word that is derived from 'domestication', the actuall overall theme for his collection. Starting from his personal experience in his family he dove into research of various artists focusing on topics 'God', 'Skin' and 'Surrounding'.  Nastasia Fine was inspired by dolls. 'For me they perfectly represent the spirit of woman who have a body like a child but who can also be very sexual'.

Sander Bos
Sanan Gasanov dove into family archives, discovering his grandmother's embroideries made by hand seventy years ago. Although he has never met his grandma, she died before his birth, this project felt like a spirutual collaboration with her. 'I feel spiritually connected to my grandmother and I know her through stories my family told me. The title of this collection is a pun, 'GRAND_MA' stands for 'grand master' - because receiving my Master's degree from this school is a huge deal - and 'grandma' speaks for itself. I thought it was beautiful how it all came together.'

With words of Sanan I can only add that it is such a delight to see the work of all this passionate and hardworking designers who show stay true to their believes and personal life stories. Life itself is afterall the everlasting mystery driving us into sublime thoughts and dreams.

Below some more highlights from many talented designers who showed their work.

KABK Fashion Show 2016

Woody 's-Gravemade
The Fashion Show 2016 at Royal Academy of Fine Art The Hague (KABK)
In recent years the KABK has delivered multiple talented designers, such as Bastian Visch, Marije de Haan and Nikki Duijst who all won the prestigious Lichting Award.
Under leadership by the avant-garde designer Jurgi Persoons, the fashion and textile department of the KABK has become the show to scout talents. What stands out the KABK is the expressive approach not only with design and material but also with narrative.
Perfect example is the graduate Woody 's-Gravemade who made a poetic statement with his collection 'Dutch' Culture. In his collection he mixed Western and Middle Eastern culture, exploring the culture clash by blending street wear with islamic garments such as the burqa and niqab with typical Western garments such as shinny wadded jacket. Returning in the collection is the 'Turkentas', Dutch word for the cheap plastic bags mostly related to the stereotypical image of migrants.

The Fashion Show 2016 – Gerrit Rietveld Academie

On Friday, June 17th, the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam unveiled its new generation of talents. Staged at Rai Amsterdam the Fashion Show had an impressive setting and scenography, confronting the audience with avant-garde fashion proposals and presentations.
First part of the show contained work of the 1st and 2nd year students, featuring several promising designers.
Vere van Hal kicked off the graduation class of 2016 with a voice recording of a conversation while a group of people (dressed in ‘normal’ clothing) emerged from the audience to take a walk down the catwalk.

Vere van Hal (The Netherlands) presented a project entitled ‘Identify: A framed collection’, questioning the emotional value of clothing for the wearer. She researched the fashion system starting with the thought that remain in her mind ‘Not another collection!’. Deconstructing the meaning of it all, Vere expressed her research with a performance within the traditional form of a catwalk show.

KABK Fashion Show 2015

Merel Bos
The Royal Academy of Arts The Hague (KABK) Fashion Show 2015

In past few years KABK has delivered multiple talented designers, such as Bastian Visch and Marije de Haan who won the Lichting award. Since 2013, avant-garde designer Jurgi Persoons leads the fashion and textile department, and considering the 2015 fashion show it is evident that KABK fashion department remains a relevant breeding place for aspiring designers.
The course curriculum has similiar structure as the Antwerp Fashion department. The fashion show started with 1st years experimental dresseswhere talents like Inge Vaandering emerge.
Following the 2nd years historical costumes inspired looks and 3rd years ethnical inspired collections.
All together a display of potential in particular with the menswear collections, but also designers Jenske Sypkens Smit and Jade Van der Mark impressed with their collections (see images below).
Although always fascinating to see the visions of the creative minds of the future, it is the graduates who trigger the most. This year nine students presented their collections. Fabian Bredt opened the show with a strong presentation with more than 20 outfits, conceptual but yet a nice ready-to-wear menswear collection. Ruby de Bruijn presented a beautiful all white collection with beautiful details while Merel Bos blew away with her exotic collection 'Isolated collective Uniqueness'.  Nikki Duijst closed the show with impressive well-tailored and composed collection. Oliver Jehee's proposed a rebellious, Westwood-kinda vibe while Bram Vervoort showed promising menswear collection with commercial potential. Among the graduates there where also collections by designers Anne Oomen, Nienke Smeulders and Marlies van Stolk.

ArtEZ Graduation Show 2015

Joanne Vosloo
For more than 60 years, the ArtEZ Institute of the Arts in Arnhem has been delivering successful fashion designers.
Viktor & Rolf, Jan Taminiau, Iris van Herpen, Bas Kosters, Liselore Frowijn and many more.
ArtEZ Graduation Show 2015 was no exception, with their 21 graduate collections there was plenty of excitement to experience. Clearly the ArtEZ students don't fear to experiment with patterns and to apply material manipulations that lead to innovation.
The show kicked off with fashion film presentation of 1st and 2nd year students and Fashion and The Sea project. Collectie Arnhem, by 3rd year students
was the first show to see on the runway. But eventually it is all about the graduate collection with strong proposals by Isabelle Tellié, Diek Pothoven,  Joanne Vosloo, Yvette Peek, Marieke van de Ven, Madelène van Ulden, Josephine Goverts and Max Zara Sterck.

Five designers are finalists for the Frans Molenaar Award 2015: Lilian Admiraal, Josephine Goverts, Max Zara Sterck, Tung Trinh and Maartje Janse.
Also nominated for the Frans Molenaar are the two ArtEZ Fashion Master graduates Sunanda Koning and Simeon Morris. The last name, Simeo Morris, is showing at 7th edition of FASHIONCLASH Festival (June 11-14).

The two ArtEZ representatives for the Lichting 2015 supported by V&D award are Isabelle Tellié and Yvette Peek.
Lichting 2015 show takes place during Amsterdam Fashion Week on 10th of July.

If you still want to see the work of the graduates you can visit their graduation exhibition from Juy 1-5 at the former ABN AMRO building (Gele Rijdersplein in Arnhem).
