Future Petroleum by Annika Kappner

Future Petroleum by Annika Kappner at Marres during FASHIONCLASH Festival
Date: 1 July
Time: 1.30 – 2.30 pm and 3.30 – 4.30 pm

Future Petroleum by Annika Kappner is an installation performance adapted for The Painted Bird at Marres to create a multi-sensorial tableau vivant that envelops the viewers. The work explores the layering of perception and the consumption of experiences offered by the fashion and entertainment industries, the corporate world and the art world. It wonders what form of energy source the vast stream of images that are created and consumed on a daily basis will eventually yield.

Annika Kappner (DE, 1980) crafts multi-sensory experiences in the extended field of painting, by reverting principles of virtual and digital realities into the analogue realm to create glitches in perception. Prompted by her experience as an investment banker, her work targets the evolution of consciousness in relation to mental patterns and the underlying forces that shape their systemic counterparts in nature, visual arts, technology and science. She is a co-founder of the cross-modal artist collective Elephants & Volcanoes. Performers: Fina Anjou (SE), Nicola Baratto (IT), Karolien Buurman (NL), Arie de Fijter (BE), Aurélien Lepetit (FR).

Future Petroleum is made with the support of the AFK (Amsterdam Fund for the Arts). The performance is part of Fashion Makes Sense, the 9th edition of FASHIONCLASH Festival in Maastricht (June 29 – July 2). www.fashionclash.nl

WE MAKE CARPETS

We Make Carpets is the creative collaboration of visual artist Bob Waardenburg and designers Stijn van der Vleuten and Marcia Nolte. Their carpets are constructed by hand with ordinary every day materials in a very extraordinary way.
The carpets are temporary, made on the spot with no thought out plans or sketches beforehand. This temporarity of the carpets makes it poetic and sublime.
The artists choose a material and commence on a journey together where they lay down the chosen materials one after the other in intricate patterns. The three designers bonded over this “in the moment” approach to creating, and their style seems to fit quite well –each carpet is a handcrafted masterpiece.

PARKers at Frontenpark Maastricht

Lukas Kramer
From 31st of August until 8th of September you can (re)discover Frontenpark thanks to PARKers exhibition.

It is located so close to the historic city of Maastricht, however for many people including me a forgotten and unknown territory with a diverse scenery, cultural-historical, and nature. A lush ‘wild’ nature with traces of the industrial past and the remains of seventeenth-century fortifications.
In the near future, this area will be developed as the Frontenpark: a new city park on the north side of the city centre.
In the last forty years this place was quite neglected and forgotten and now it is in the starting point of transition to become a new urban landscape.
This is so exciting, it feels like Maastricht is growing up, literally growing.

Since this summer an extensive program of activities has started to take place in the Frontenpark. My first encounter with the Frontenpark happend last weekend at the opening of PARKers, curated by the Bart van den Boom and Ilona van den Brekel.
This is such a wonderful opportunity to get to know this new place and get inspired by nine temporary art installations.

PARKers presents nine temporary artworks/installations in public space by these artists: Jeroen van Bergen, Charbel-Joseph H. Boutros, Jens Brouwers, Stefan Cools, Paul Devens, Lucas Kramer, La Bolleur, Han Rameckers and Oscar Santillan.

PARKers is initiated by Huis voor de Kunsten Limburg, in collaboration with Bureau Europa and Van Eyck Academy.

"Countless works and installations I have built, mostly straight into their spaces. Through my work I try to search my constantly changing outline. I need an outline to understand myself more clearly - to understand where the internal ends and the external begins."

Finnish environmental artist Kaarina Kaikkonen is using hundreds of second hand shirts to create giant shirt installations, which look as if someone hung his huge amount of clothes out to dry.

Mimicry Chairs by Nendo at London Design Festival 2012

Mimicry Chairs
10th anniversary of the London Design Festival, and the 4th London Design Festival at the V&A took place from 14 - 23 September.
To mark this special year there were specially commissioned installations and displays throughout the Museum like this one from Nendo.

It’s not everyday that a designer is given the opportunity to create a contemporary installation amid the splendour of the V&A Museum, which is already home to over four million items of historical and contemporary art and design. This year, that invitation has been
extended to Nendo, a Japanese studio that has emerged as one of the most dynamic design groups of the last decade.

Capitalismo Amarillo by Jota Izquierdo

Capitalismo amarillo: Special Economic Zone. A Multi-media installation of Jota Izquierdo at Manifesta 9 biennal exhibition

The term “yellow peril” began to circulate at the end of the nineteenth century, when it was used as a racialised description for the sense of threat that Europeans and Americans felt at the increasing numbers of Chinese labourers arriving on their soil. By the end of the twentieth century, the West’s old economic fears of China had gained new currency, insofar as unscrupulous Chinese counterfeiters began to be perceived as posing a substantial threat to the intellectual property of the West.

BodyTalks, video art installations in public space

BodyTalks Video Art & Cinedans in Public Space

19 video works in the city + 4 installations inside cultural institutions
September 30th until October 23rd - 18.00 - 00.00 hrs - Maastricht

In few hours Nederlandse Dansdagen (Dutch Dance Festival) will open with a very promising program.
Before that let’s have a look at BodyTalks, that had it’s opening last week. From September 30th until October 23rd, Viewmaster Maastricht and Cinedans Amsterdam present the exhibition BodyTalks – Video Art & Cinedans in Public Space in the inner city of Maastricht. From shop windows, vacant business premises and residences, 23 videos and Cinedans films are showed every evening on the streets of Maastricht.http://brankopopovic.blogspot.com/2011/09/bodytalks.html

I am a boy band
The video installations can be found in Brusselse Straat and Grote Gracht in Maastricht and that is very good choice. First of all because it’s the street I have to use while I go home after work and I get to enjoy this experience more often. But also because these street have certain urban atmosphere where various people are coming through. There are coffeeshops, student bars, University, empty shops, snack bars, but also very nice houses. I’ve always liked this part of the city because it has a ‘big city’ vibe. BodyTalks gives it an extra dimension and lights it up.
