Exciting news! The season to come, 2014-2015 season, the Brussels opera house La Monnaie presents the world premiere of a new opera based on the album Medúlla of the singer Björk. This particular production is created by the Netherlands-based director Sjaron Minailo (Studio Minailo) and sung by including Roberta Alexander and Kevin Walton (both based in the Netherlands). A large part of the artistic team comes from the Netherlands, including composers Anat Spiegel (musical arrangement) and Henry Vega (electronics). The costume and set design is in the hands of the Danish fashion designer Hernik Vibskov.
 ‘What happened before we got involved in problematic things like civilization, religion and nationhood ?’ In her conceptual album Medúlla, Icelandic artist Björk returns to a pagan universe that is entirely human. Björk’s composition for a cappella voices explores a huge array of vocal techniques, from throat-singing and choruses to beatboxing and pop harmonies.
Released in 2004, the album was her reaction to counter the outbreaks of racism and neo-nationalism after the 9/11 attacks. A decade later, an ensemble of singers representing different generations – children and youth choirs next to senior opera singers – unites to redefine in meditative images what Björk named ‘medúlla’ – ‘an ancient spirit that’s passionate and dark, a spirit that survives’ – the basic element of human condition that unites us all, despite different beliefs, origins, nations and ages.

Bruis Festival Maastricht 2013

Last weekend Bruis festival took over Maastricht with its 7th edition. I still remember when it all started on the market square in Maastricht with the unforgetable performance by Vive la Fête. It is wonderful to see how many people were there enjoying live music and acts like Miles Kane, Kitty Daisy & Lewis, Montevideo, SX and many more.

FAGNARDS. Too much love will kill you

'Fagnards', a short wildlife music documentary, premiered during Made in Europe Go Short short film festival.

'Fagnards' is a story of a tragic love affair made by the Belgian musician/filmmaker who goes by the name of TOUR (Hasselt, 1977) On January 22 1871, Marie Solheid and François Reiff took off to Marie’s native village to settle their marriage. They decided to take the shortest route: across the High Fens, a rough nature area with unpredictable weather conditions. They would never reach their goal: the couple died in the middle of the Fens, desorientated and struck with hypothermia. On the location where they past away people placed the Lover’s Cross.

Axelle Red - Fashion Victim at Fashion Museum Hasselt

It has been a while since the fantastic opening but here it is finally, my report. It was one of the best openings in a while, it seemed like the whole Belgian fashion scene was there.

Axelle Red is a successful singer-song writer, humanist and a style icon with a giant wardrobe. A wardrobe that, as it turns out, in a museum context turns into an art collection.

Her wardrobe turned out to be so special that Kenneth Ramaekers, director of MMH, the Fashion Museum Hasselt got the idea to ask her as a guest curator for an exhibition in the framework of a series of 'not professional curatorship by local heroes'.
Such as "Ultra Mega Lore' in 2010, an exhibition curated by the originating from Hasselt top model Hanelore Knuts.

Axelle also got carte blanche to tell her story. In addition to fashion she therefore also shows photography, video and art. With this expo she breaks a lance for Belgian artists, as she says.

27 years ago when Axelle Red (born Fabienne Demal in Hasselt in 1968) began to save money to buy unique clothing she didn't thought that today she would own a huge and very relevant wardrobe.
If you see the amount of clothing that she owns you think indeed 'a fashion victim', but each piece has its own story. For Axelle the clothes are more than just something you can wear. For her clothing are creative assets with which she expresses the spirit of various fases in her life. The clothing reflects on many friendships that she has kept thanks to her career, such as the special relationship with designer Véronique Leroy.

Thank God her passion so deeply rooted that she has almost kept everything.

Black Balloon at Fier Showroom A/W 13/14 in Berlin

‘The Black collection’, a premium Black Balloon with a va-va-voom! 

Meet Black Balloon, an emerging label from Ghent (Belgium). They have been very active and successful in last few years. They gained international media attention, stylists love their styles and musicians like Soulwax and Jessie Ware like to ware it.
I have met them for the first time at DSGNRMRKT events in Hasselt where they draw attention to me with their enthusiasm and diverse clothing and accessories. Now they are heading to Berlin to Fier Showroom A/W 2013/14 that will take place during Berlin Fashion Week. They will present their latest collection inspired by their roots, memories of family and summer holiday photos.

Q&A with the girls from Black Balloon

Where do you come from, what’s your background?
We are Black Balloon, two girls, Cléo Baele and Sarah Bos Together we form the creative brain behind this young label from Ghent (Belgium), where we create our own world, the world of Black Balloon. Cléo has also a fashion photography background and Sarah has a technical fashion background.

Are there any Influences from your country?
Our biggest inspiration is music! In Belgium we have so much pioneers in the music scene, for example 2 many dj’s (mixing all styles together), Arno (mixing punk with blues) and many more. Music is a red thread through our collection and through our own lives.

Who's behind your label? How did you start? Why?
Two girls, Cléo Baele and Sarah Bos. We are best friends for years now and when we were together in final year at the academy, we decided to work together on our graduation collection. It worked so well (winning some fashion prices) and there was true chemistry in our designs, that we decided to start our own label together. We immediately gained media attention because we designed shoes and bags for Soulwax (aka 2many dj’s) and we went all the way with the successful flow.

FAGNARDS Preview

Belgian musician makes short film about drama on High Fens (Belgium) and he is looking for investors through crowdfunding.

Few months ago the initiator of the project, musician TOUR (Stijn Segers), asked me if I was interested to design costumes for FAGNARDS project. I was sold immediately to this unique project and said yes. Meanwhile, the costumes are done and the docu has been filmed and I can't wait to see the end result.


FAGNARDS needs your support
Until then FAGNARDS is featured on Cinecrowd.nl a non-profit organization that together with filmmakers is looking for investment for their film project among the film audience. In exchange for the investment the will receive rewards. You can already support the project with a small donation.
From today there are 60 days to find investors who can give FAGNARDS the extra push it needs. The aim is 2500 euro. Investing is possible with a small amount of money: the start amount is 15 euro. There are several investment formulas possible. Check the details for crowdfunding here.
