HERMIONE FLYNN - LAWLESS

Hermione Flynn presents a new collection 'LAWLESS'.

Berlin based designer, Hermione Flynn presents another strong concept collection 'LAWLESS'.
In line with her previous work Hermione is gaining momentum with her unique design vision and style that goes beyond trend and seasons. Recently she has showed the collection at Hyères Festival where she was one of the nominees of this prestigious annual prize. In 2016 she has won the 2nd KALTBLUT Magazine Award at FASHIONCLASH Festival.

"As technology advances exponentially, the law as we currently know it struggles to maintain authority. Physical borders have become redundant in the face of an uncontrollable, lawless digital realm. It is the prospect of “lawless-ness” which is at the heart of the new HERMIONE FLYNN concept collection."

“LAWLESS”
As a point of departure, FLYNN staged a technological experiment featuring long-term dance collaborator, Moo Kim, and the use of a 3D Sensor Motion Capture system. Through this work, FLYNN explored how the limitations of the technology and the physical body, translated onto a digital figure. The most profound result portrayed a digital figure who did not recognize the “borders” of their own “flesh” or “skin” – arms passed through the torso, legs dissected one another, the head punctuated through the shoulders…

Utilizing the imagery, FLYNN has developed a collection which features classic menswear items, yet caters to the misplacement or duplication of limbs, portraying the physical realizations of a “borderless” or “lawless” reality. With a specific focus on the Western attire of the predominantly white, male law-makers, garments such as work suits, blazers, shirts, and trench-coats have been twisted, shifted, duplicated and reversed, creating an allusion of political disturbance and disorientation.

Design Academy Eindhoven Graduation 2016

Aina Seerden
Design Academy Eindhoven graduation show during Dutch Design Week is each year one of my favorite places to discover design talents. In past years the projects have become even more relevant and engaging with societal issues.

In this post you can discover a selection of graduation projects.

For example 'Reborn' by Pleun van Dijk in which she provides a platform for ethical questions in relation to repairing of damaged body parts and desire to keep reconstructing ourselves until we are perfect.

Debora Dax's project 'A DRESS Transition' shows a
clothing collection designed for persons born in a male body who like to express their feminine side. "Finding and fitting woman's clothing can often end up as a disillusion for them: The shoulders are too tight, the sleeves too short and often the hips are too wide. Small adjustments in forms and measurements help them to minimize masculien body characteristics and to emphasize the feminine appearance without feeling restricted in their given figure."
'Safe Ground' by Snir Gedasi is a project that presents an aboveground modular shelter with an integrated playground for children in war zones. “All the elements come at a very low cost, allowing Non-governmental Organizations to easily invest in the mental and physical wellbeing of especially children in times of war.”

Floriane Misslin impressed with the project 'Uni—Sex', which is a is a case study in which she distilled unisex fashion imagery to denote its visual language and cultural codes.
"Archived in a book the visual analysis observes how the male and female body is represented in an idealized context of gender neutrality. Considering the images connotations in paralell to sociology and fashion history, the study extracts elements of contradiction between the unisex statement and the visual language they use. Thus the project tempts to propose new codes for a unisex imagery fitting upcoming visions of gender"

Another remarkable project is the 'Forest Wool' by Tamara Orjola's.In this project she presents stools and carpets made from processed pine needles left over from the timber industry. By crushing, soaking, steaming, binding and pressing the needles, Orjola extracts the pine needles' fibre and transforms it into textiles, composites and paper. The process also allows essential oils and dye to be extracted and used.

Olle Lundin presented the projects 'Body Behaviour' in which he explores the body performativity in high fashion advertising and 'Qwearing the Collection' in which he explores how a queer perspective can be used to change the experience of the museum and the art on display in it, therefore provoking further thought and analysis from the visitors.

Hermione Flynn - FASHIONCLASH Festival 2015

HERMIONE FLYNN - (IN)DIFFERENCE

Looking back to the 7th edition FASHIONCLASH Festival is a real pleasure, especially when things collide into timeless moments. When fashion becomes more than just clothes and skips a heartbeat because we can just be who ever we want to be without looking away. When fashion places a mirror to confront us with what beauty really means. The moment when transgender model Gia Bab, divine human being, steps on the stage it always impresses. But this time it was everything and more.
Conceptual designer Hermione Flynn staged a catwalk performance with minimal but highly effective acts, expressing her collection '(In)Difference'.
Taking unisex to a a higher level this collection explores gender codes and gender inequality.

UNISEX - Vivienne Westwood AW2015

Taking 'Unisex' to another level with Fall 2015 collection presentation.
The iconic British designer has launched a political clothing collection designed to be worn by either men or women.
As our approach and attitude to androgyny in fashion has evolved and society’s boundaries towards masculine-feminine attributes have blurred, people are increasingly taking a more relaxed unisex attitude towards their clothing choices.
The new unisex line adds a whole new concept to borrowing from your other-half's wardrobe. Trousers for women, dresses for men.
The collection was created by Westwood alongside Andreas Kronthaler and focuses on a more relaxed silhouette with wrap around jackets, knitted jumpers and baggy shorts all of which are designed to be worn by both sexes.
The Unisex idea originates from Vivienne’s ‘DO IT YOURSELF’ collection and is informed by her well known ethos to ‘Buy less, choose well, and make it last.’ In creating this incredibly wearable and desirable unisex line she has made adhering to her fashion philosophy easier than ever.

Adrià Colorado - Rupestris

Adrià Colorado
Impeccable tailoring and purist unisex lines are the guidelines for Adrià Colorado's work. However, his designs are a risky combination of concepts. Those purist pieces become the blank canvas where he lets his imagination run wild, creating handmade patterns that will later be digitalized on the fabrics--the combination of craftmanship and technology create the iconic look by Adrià Colorado, who also cares about interesting fabrics and cuts for his designs. Adrià Colorado merges mode d'auteur with a street avant-garde look, for those who feel self-confident, daring, serene but fun.

Rupestris
After suggesting a trip to Le Maroc with his first collection, Adrià Colorado wants us to escape beyond our rational limits again. The exotism of the pre-historic era was appealing to the designer since a very young age and became the source of inspiration for hist latest collection. These pieces blend together the risk of adventure and imagination, the irrationality of dreaming beyond our conceptions of time and space, and the chaos and innocence of a little child when drawing for the first time. All these elements, along with an exquisite purity in lines and cuts, create a sense of serenity in the irrational, or the order in chaos. The result is a radical collection both for its visual and conceptual implications that still supports the identity of the brand--a wild exploration of exotic imagery mixing naif craftmanship with the latest digital technology.

The film
Josep Prat Sorolla is the author of Rupestris, the fashion film that brings together all those elements in Adrià Colorado imagery. The video progresses as an elegant series of moving portraits that combine all those elements in the collection with endless visual references--from arrows or bones to more subtle symbols such as silhouettes and dynamism, embodying cave paintings. In the end, Josep Prat Sorolla manages to make us follow the designer's order: it is impossible to decline such an invitation to escape. The viewer is immersed in Adrià's universe: a world full of explosive color, neat images, geometry, absurdity and coherence. A world that is just as sofisticated and naif as own or fantasy.
