Opening WinterSALON / 2014

Frowijn & Tilanus Atelier
On Sunday, January 26, SALON/ had its 14th salon event opening in three years. The Winter/SALON 2014 kick off opening took place at Porsthoornkerk.
Manon Schaap and Gijs Stork, the initiators of SALON stated that their mission with SALON is to create intimate settings for dialogues, presentations and to show the stories behind the work.  They aim to be a showcase of the process behind art and design instead of just showing the finished work.
The multidisciplinary installations at Posthoornkerk expressed this approach with a variety of work by talents from Design Academy Eindhoven, Collectie Arnhem 2014 by Artez students and my personal highlight, the work of Aaltje Kramer. Kramer presented her 'Fashion Without Images' project where she translated fashion editorials into words and poetry. She invites the audience to use their immagination.
Opera singer Imara Thomas performed within the 'youasme measyou' installation and in addition there is an interesting installation by Conny Groenewegen & Frans-Pieter Vonck, Berber Soepboer.

I have also visited Lensvelt location where you can see work by Frowijn&Tilanus Atelier, Sander Wassink Ma'ayan Pesach and Marga Weimans.

Frowijn&Tilanus Atelier is a collaboration of two very talented designers who graduation collections where noticed and awarded. Liselore Frowijn won Frans Molenaar Couture Award 2013 and Henriëtte Tilanus won G-Star Raw Lichting 2013 Award. Recently she won the People's Price at H&M Award 2014. Keep your eyes on this two designers!

Furthermore there are many presentations and events during WinterSALON / 2014  that is taking place until February 9 in Amsterdam.

The first edition of the Dutch Wool Week is officially launched with the opening of the exhibition '21 Wool Masters' in Amsterdam. 21 top fashion designers and promising fashion alumni are showing unique woollen creations at Hotel Droog.

The Wool Week is an initiative of Campaign for Wool. From 5th to 11th of November 5th 2012 you can find scattered throughout different locations in Amsterdam the unique properties of wool. With their surprising designs, the 21 Dutch 'Wool Masters', are showing  that wool is not just the sustainable natural product with a long history in fashion but also a product with a promising future. Wool is hot!

The Campaign for Wool is a global community of sheep farmers, retailers, designers, manufacturers and you, the wool lover! We are united by our patron His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales. The Campaign for Wool aims to educate as many people as possible about the incredible benefits and versatility of wool in fashion, furnishings and everyday life. This in turn, supports many small businesses and local farmers whose livelihoods depend on the wool industry. Every year The Campaign for Wool holds ‘Wool Week’ a week long celebration packed with woolly stunts, events, artisan workshops and gorgeous wool fashion.

youasme measyou - 'recover' FW 2012 collection

youasme measyou label is creating more than clothing. It is a story based out of of wearablle and authentic pieces that are made with quality and care.

"Now more than ever we are looking for special products that tell a story so we can actually relate to them. Things that we can cherish, that warm us and embrace us, give us shelter, inspired by the way vagabonds carry with them everything they need.

We are looking anew at the best qualities of our classics reclaiming them like cover versions of our favorite songs. Simplifying and re-shaping we are curating our essential wardrobe, all knitted, streamlined, deliberately free of excess, timeless.
Authentic quality yarns are re-invented through new applications: Coated wool becomes a high performance water-repellent trenchcoat. Heavy raw linen makes for a chic Chanel jacket or a stunning long evening dress, Cotton sweat is vegetable dyed, clearly showing its sharp constructions.
Instead of discarding raw materials at the end of their first lives we transform (and reuse) them. Recycled cashmere, the noblest of yarns, becomes reborn. Completely worn out jeans recovers as a 100% denim knit sweater.
Universal belts in washed leather gather all, defining the silhouette. A range of restrained colors from looking at a clear blue sky on a winter’s day. They underline the endless versatility of timeless distinct pieces." (youasme measyou)

Modefabriek summer 2012 edition

Last weekend I visited the summer 2012 edition of Modefabriek in Amsterdam. Modefabriek is truly the Netherlands' largest and leading fashion trade show. For already 33 editions. What I like about the fair is that is fresh, clear, well organised and that it also provides platform for young labels.

Here is an overview of my personal highlights of this edition of Modefabriek:

- Talent 2012: Carlo Wijnands curated the 7 best fashion graduates from Dutch fashion academies.

- Cutting Edge presents Glenn Martens: for this edition the avant-garde platform Cutting Edge puts the spotlight on Glenn Martens.

DFF Dutch Touch Coming Home: platform initated by Dutch Fashion Foundation where 11 prominent Dutch labels are presenting their ss2013 collections.

Participants for this edition: Bas Kosters, Studio Sober, Marcha Hüskes, Jessica Joyce, Marloes Blaas, Youasme Measyou, A.MAZE (People of the Labyrinths), Ready to Fish, Sjaak Hullekes, Jupe and Spijkers en Spijkers.

- MINT: MINT is a new tradeshow/event in Amsterdam, part of Modefabriek. It combines tradeshow and event, fashion and lifestyle. MINT has a vision for the future of fashion: great style, made with respect for people and our environment.

- MAD Brussels: fashion and design platform from Brussel with designers like Pierre-Antoine Vettorello and Marc Philippe Coudeyre http://www.madbrussels.be

- HTNK OneDayShop
- Trash & Treasures: with FEE Conceptstore

RECOVER a/w 2012-2013 by youasme measyou

On Sunday afternoon January 22 measyou youasme, knitwear and jersey label, launched their third collection ' RECOVER ' in the recently renovated Carriage House of the Museum Van Loon in Amsterdam. In an intimate preview a selection of garments from the collection for winter 2012-2013 was presented. Not on models, but members of the Family of Founders, crowdfunding community that the support the label. The presentation took place in the context of the opening weekend of WinterSalon/.

The brand youasme measyou specialises in high quality knitwear and jerseys for both men and women. youasme is one of the first labels who integrated crowd sourcing into knitwear they called the Family of Founders: '500 people bring 500 euro to launch 2 fashion brands', a remarkable and foreward idea of new creative interpreneurship gaining loans to set up a label in a whimsical economy and idem creative culture designer Mark van Vorstenbos and art-director Twan Janssen of youasme and measyou are dealing with.
The clever designs of the knitwear are made to last and are created with the finest Italian yarns. The collections youasme and measyou, one for men and one for woman, clearly complete each other but are also available separately.

More about youasme measyou, visit www.youasme.com.
