Aslo in Z33 Philip Metten - INNERCOMA (27.06 to 10.10.2010)

This exhibition transformed the whole of Z33 into an enormous sculpture, without a doubt the biggest Hasselt has ever seen. Philip Metten (Genk, 1977) is the man behind this gigantic project. Z33 gave him the opportunity to create his first solo exhibition. Philip Metten proposed to transform Z33 into a huge work of art.
Philip Metten chooses to make sculptures because that medium contrasts greatly with the hastiness of our time. Sculptures are unwieldy and static constructions that do not square with the pressure of time, the speed and the evolution of our society. Philip Metten strives to be innovative in his imagery within the art of sculpturing. His sculptures create a link between primitive, religious art forms and contemporary archetypes. He elaborates these various elements further in the architectural sculpture INNERCOMA.

Bus trip to Hasselt


From 1 to 31 October, Viewmaster Foundation presents the exhibition For Real in the public spaces of the cities of Maastricht (the Netherlands) and Hasselt (Belgium). From 17:00 hrs till 00:00 hrs, 28 various artistic visions of the shifting boundaries between the ‘real’ and the ‘unreal’ will be projected on large store windows, cultural organisations and offices.

The artists in For Real visualize unknown realities, dream worlds, utopias or conversely apocalyptic stories that both amaze and alienate. The selected works are reflections on contemporary developments in film, media, commercials and games. Areas in which boundaries between reality and virtuality increasingly blur the artificial and the authentic.

The videos, by established national and international artists and new emerging talent, have rarely or never been displayed in public areas. In the urban landscape other layers of meaning are tapped into than when displayed in a ‘white cube’ and ‘black box’ where the ‘real world’ is excluded.

For Real will be presenting new and awarded works of art by:

For Real is organised by Viewmaster Foundation, Maastricht, and curated by Bart van den Boom.
Viewmaster Foundation wants to place video art (and related media) in the Euregion, by realising high-profile video art projects in the urban and public space (and other special locations). Artistic, social and cultural topicalities are the main focus. Viewmaster Foundation wants to reach a large and new audience, and set up new partnerships.

The endless song of silence

Endless Song of Silence 2010 by Nanine Linning

Last weekend the city of Maastricht hosted once again the Dutch Dance Festival (Nederlandse Dansdagen). For me personally one of the highlights of the cultural offerings of Maastricht. On the Sunday program featured the stunning performance of 'The Endless Song of Silence' by Nanine Linning. Two people being together, but also increasingly going their separate ways. Nanine Lining and Danilo Colona dancing in a beautiful setting and impressive music (Third Symphony by Gorecki) and not to forget the costumes are designed by Iris van Herpen. 'The endless song of silence' is one of the most beautiful dance performances I've ever seen.

Parcours Maastricht 2010

Parcours (Opening of the cultural season in Maastricht)
11 & 12 September 2010


Last weekend Parcours Maastricht celebrated it's 15th edition.
This year multidisciplinary artist, Kaspar König, came up with a project ' Park your ID' for Parcours opening night (Saturday 11 September). In the Q-park garage Vrijthof, artists and cultural organisations where invited to 'park their identity' or ‘park their idea'. Great and innovative concept, but I was disappointed by the content of the program that is partially filled by the KOM (Cultural Discussion Maastricht) members and partly by various artists from Europe who have been invited.

Decadent Pigeons in Barcelona by Lisa Klappe and Joachim van den Hurk



Photographer Lisa Klappe and spatial artist Joachim van den Hurk detect decay, boredom and slackness in many people. Is that blatant decadence the price we have to pay for prosperity and the so-called individual freedom in which we live?

With the exposition Decadent Pigeons both (together and separate) hold up a mirror to us. From the parallels they discovered between the behavior of pigeons and people they drew the not very roseate conclusion that if we continue this way, we will end up being exactly as those birds, grey shadows, still further removed from out nature, dismally bored and scandalously discontented.

Their works of art are unequivocally blunt and direct. Static portraits, grubby film mountings and living sculptures do confront us with their black humor and their nearly perverse overtones. In that way, they create an 'unheimisch' feeling that in itself leads to an immediate reflective mood.

Lisa Klappe (Eindhoven, 1979) is a photographer of fashion, design and people. In 2006 she finished her studies at the Amsterdam Photo Academy. Since that day she works as an independent photographer and editor, both for herself and on commission. Her photographs are a staged registration of the way she sees, discovers and experiences her surroundings. With a clear eye for detail she creates a subtle tension between beauty and repulsiveness. In that way even ugliness becomes aesthetical, but never without telling a story.

Joachim van den Hurk (Eindhoven, 1945) is spatial artist. He graduated from the Academy of Art as architectural designer, worked for several years in architectural firms in The Netherlands and organized expositions. During these years he developed a great passion for landscape architecture and planology. Since the 1980's he works as an independent artist and designer. Expositions of his works were held in The Netherlands, France, Spain and Australia. Joachim van den Hurk by turns lives in Barcelona and the south of France.



Decadent Pigeons opens September 09, 2010 until September 30, 2010 at Gallery Fort Pienc in Barcelona, Spain. In October 2010 Decadent Pigeons will under proviso move to the former textile factory De Ploeg near Eindhoven, The Netherlands for a special exposition during Eindhoven's Dutch Design Week. More information will follow as soon as possible.
