Het Geluid Maastricht 'Life is too good to be true'

Last week Maastricht was marked by Festival CEMENT. I just saw few things and I am glad I finally saw 'Life is too good to be true' by Het Geluid Maastricht!

'Life is too good to be true' examines the role of truth in our contemporary (pop) culture. What begins as a portrait of a notorious liar, young American journalist Stephen Glass, becomes a tour along a group therapy session, some pink ribbons, a little Lady Gaga, lots of scary dogs, and a nightmare in a movie theatre. A tour through all the lies we tell ourselves today.

With 'Life is too good to be true / cacophony2', The Geluid Maastricht won jury and audience award during the Amsterdam Fringe Festival: the Dioraphte Amsterdam Fringe Award 2010.

Yesterday was the opening and I attended the premiere of the theatre performance 'The Father, the Son and the Holy Feast' by Sadettin Kirmiziyüz in Het Huis van Bourgondië.

The Father, the Son and the Holy Feast
Original Dutch title: De vader, de Zoon en het Heilige Feest

In November 2010 Sadettin Kirmiziyüz made the biggest journey of his life. Together with his father he went to Mecca for a pilgrimage, the Hajj, to continue a family tradition. With his father as a minister in this ancient ritual, he was ordained as an apprentice. Armed with the experience of this intrusive trip he makes a performance about fathers and sons, believing and not believing, Abraham, Isaac, Muhammad, God and Allah. A sacred road story where nothing cannot be done and everything is true. And that should be celebrated.

Production: C-mine Cultuurcentrum, De Queeste, Dommelhof, Het Huis van Bourgondië

Emke Idema 'Ins and outs of the hole in your head
' is also included in the Festival.

Wim Wenders 'Pina'

I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE IT!

PINA is a film for Pina Bausch. Shot in 3D with the ensemble of the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, this feature-length dance film portrays the exhilarating and inimitable art of this great German choreographer who died in the summer of 2009.

PINA has been selected to premiere at the prestigious Berlin Film Festival in February.
Pina Bausch was a legendary dancer and choreographer whom Wim knew personally. Her unique creations transformed the language of dance and offered a visual experience like no other.

This revolutionary 3D film PINA from director Wim Wenders captures the aesthetic of Pina Bausch’s greatest works in a thrilling way. Wim chose to shoot PINA in 3D as he felt it was the only medium that could truly deliver the awe of her work for a theatrical audience.

Paul Lightfoot and Sol León 'Same Difference'

Thuesday 15 February, Theater aan het Vrijthof presented a triptych 'Entwine' by Nederlands Danstheater I.
Two premieres and a reprise. The highlight of the evening was the second performance "Same Difference" by choreographers Paul Lightfoot and Sol León. It was just great! Dance, set and lighting design, costumes, and not to forget the 'always beautiful' music of Philip Glass.
The third piece is also worth mentioning 'Still Life' by Aszure Barton. With beautiful costumes by Michelle Jank, too bad I don't have any image to share with you. Again with fantastic music, Abel Korzeniowski, Shigeru Umebayashi, etc.

'Same Differences'
Inspired by the chaotic influence of egos and the simplicity of stepping away from them. (Sol & Paul)

With the ballet Same Difference (2007) choreographers Paul Lightfoot and Sol León were breaking new ground. In the ballet they added alienating and deformed voices to their dance language and the first steps on the theatrical path were made.

Seven weird characters sketch a surreal world to exciting music by Philip Glass. Their mysterious cries fuse perfectly together with their movements and at times give them something alarming in the dark setting. Same Difference allows your own imagination to run wild.

I want to see it again!

'Zaaisieraad' by Wieteke Opmeer

One of the participants of the new exhibition 'The Future That Never Was' at the Fashion Museum Hasselt is Wieteke Opmeer with a wonderful project 'Zaaisieraad' (Seed jewellery).

After the study for florist Wieteke Opmeer studied product design at the HKU.
As part of graduation project, Wieteke Opmeer designed a series of jewellery of temporary nature, fashioned out of water soluble fabric and seeds of wild flowers, some coloured with green tea. The pieces can be worn, but after some time they dissolve slowly by contact with fluids (perspiration, rain, etc.). When one of the necklaces cannot be worn anymore, or when the owner feels the need to part with it, it can be placed on a nice spot in a natural environment. Here it will dissolve. Later, wild flowers will grow on that spot. For more info: http://www.wietekeopmeer.nl

The exhibition 'Alter Nature: The Future That Never Was' opened 29th of January and is open until the 5th of June 2011 at the Fashion Museum of Hasselt (MMH).
