Out of Fashion: Maastricht Edition

Last weekend, Saturday 14 May, the exhibition 'Out of Fashion: Maastricht Edition' was opened in NaiM/Bureau Europa.
Before the official opening there was a performance by Painted Series 'Painted Game'.

Guus Beumer and Eve-Marie Kuistermans

The programme for Out of Fashion – Maastricht Edition consists of an exhibition, a film programme and a series of events on the interaction between fashion and film. This project demonstrates how fashion houses, avant-garde designers and young, still unknown fashion designers make use of film, video and online media to shape, distribute and sell their designs and vision.
For more information on activities during Out of Fashion – Maastricht Edition: www.bureau-europa.nl or my Out of Fashion blogpost.

Here is a short selection of exhibited works.
There is more to see and it's very worth to visit! 'Out of Fashion: Maastricht Edition' is open until 26th of June 2011.

Painted Game

At the opening of 'Out of Fashion:Maastricht Edition' in NAiM/Bureau Europa, Saturday 14 May, Painted presented their recent and previous work with a performance 'Painted Game'. For this performance Painted collaborated with students from the Toneelacademie Maastricht.

Painted is a collective led by Saskia van Drimmelen, Margreet Sweerts and Desirée Hammen.
They believe in the strength of collaboration. They work together with masters in nearly forgotten crafts like needlepoint lace from Bulgaria and beadwork of the Assiniboine tribe from Northern America. By sharing knowledge and the joy of making, traditional techniques breathe new life.

Poster for the 64th Cannes Film Festival

This photo of Faye Dunaway was taken by Jerry Schatzberg in 1970.
Model of sophistication and timeless elegance, it is an embodiment of the cinematic dream that the Festival de Cannes seeks to maintain.

Jerry Schatzberg is a filmmaker from New York who won the Palme d’Or in 1973 for Scarecrow. He began his career as a photographer and his work is quickly noticed, in particular a series of Bob Dylan photos from the 60s which ultimately are used on the cover of the legendary album Blonde on Blonde. In the early 70s Schatzberg turns to filmmaking and his first film, Puzzle of a Downfall Child (1970), reveals an exceptional sense of framing and lighting for a first-timer. Panic In Needle Park (1971) with newcomer Al Pacino and Scarecrow follow and are both award-winners in Cannes.

Puzzle of a Downfall Child, in which Faye Dunaway has the starring role, has been restored by Universal Pictures. Rarely seen on the big screen the film will be distributed in France by Carlotta in the fall and the restored print will be screened in Cannes in the presence of the director and his actress.

The poster was produced by the H5 design agency, which is also providing the graphics for the 2011 Festival.

The 64th annual Cannes Film Festival is being held from May 11 to May 22, 2011

an Fabre took inspiration for his latest production from the adventures of Prometheus, a mythological ‘rebel without a cause’. Prometheus rebelled against the supreme god Zeus, stole the fire from the heaven and gave it to humanity. Zeus punished him by chaining him to the Caucasus. To Fabre, Prometheus is a figurehead of proud autonomy. The audience become fellow sufferers of this tragic hero's dreadful fate, thus purifying them of the toxins in his body. Nine performers a total work of word, music, dance and performance.

ZOUT by Conny Janssen Danst

Tuesday evening, May 3, Theater aan het Vrijthof hosted ‘ZOUT’ the latest
choreography of Conny Janssen. In ZOUT there are seven exceedingly strong, male dancers and Anne Soldaat, currently one of the best guitarists in the Dutch pop scene.

Before the show there was an introduction in which Conny Janssen herself was interviewed.

Several years ago Conny and her team began by developing a main idea for this performance. It would be a representation of the principle of 'control and losing control "and it would be a performance with only male dancers.

Following up on her highly acclaimed productions ‘Welk een eer voor het vaderland te mogen sterven’ (1996) and REBOUND (2005), Conny Janssen’s third choreography also features men only. ZOUT, Dutch for ‘salt’, is a choreography for eight men - seven dancers and guitarist Anne Soldaat - who move in a world where order and control have to keep chaos at bay.

Until 2004, Anne Soldaat was a member of the successful band Daryll-Ann. His solo CD In Another Life appeared to great acclaim last year. He has also played in Tim Knol’s band since 2009. Many people now consider Anne Soldaat the best guitarist in the Netherlands. http://annesoldaat.com/

Conny Janssen explains the meaning of the title ZOUT.
‘Salt is a powerful word with many associations. Salt puts processes into effect, makes the hard soft and brigs transformation into being’.

Conny Janssen: ‘I like the dynamics you get with a group of men, the direct way in which they communicate and the physical possibilities they offer me. This also gives me a certain freedom. I do not have to create pretty duets, so we can deal with different things. Over the last few years, I have developed a particular line in large-scale works for mixed groups such as SO HERE WE ARE (2008), and I find it interesting to take that line further with these eight men.’

As in all her work, the music is prominent but it leaves enough room for the dancers to tell the story. The music, the dancers and the whole setting in ZOUT is another strong performance by Conny Janssen Danst and truly a great experience.

thank you for a great evening!

Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty

The spring 2011 Costume Institute exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty, is on view May 4 through July 31.
The exhibition celebrates the late Mr. McQueen's extraordinary contributions to fashion. From his Central Saint Martins postgraduate collection in 1992 to his final runway presentation, which took place after his death in February 2010, Mr. McQueen challenged and expanded our understanding of fashion beyond utility to a conceptual expression of culture, politics, and identity.

His iconic designs constitute the work of an artist whose medium of expression was fashion. The exhibition features approximately one hundred ensembles and seventy accessories from Mr. McQueen’s prolific nineteen-year career. Drawn primarily from the Alexander McQueen Archive in London, with some pieces from the Givenchy Archive in Paris as well as private collections, signature designs including the “bumster” trouser, the kimono jacket, and the three-point “origami” frock coat will be on view. McQueen’s fashions often referenced the exaggerated silhouettes of the 1860s, 1880s, 1890s, and 1950s, but his technical ingenuity always imbued his designs with an innovative sensibility that kept him at the vanguard.
