Storysewing by Merel Boers (Miss Blackbirdy)

During the festive month of December the PRINT Gallery has been transformed into the fantasy world of Merel Boers (Miss Blackbirdy).
She graduated from Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam in 2006. During her course of study she developed a love for fashion and illustration. We had the pleasure to showcase her work during FASHIONCLASH Maastricht 2010.
Merel Boers has already won several prices and in 2010 "Storysewing" was awarded with the Fiep Westendorp illustration prize. This prize gave her the possibility to realise this project.
Merel Boers brings her sketchbook to life through Storysewing, pen and paper are replaced by needle and thread. The result is stunning. I could not stay long but it was worth it.

You can visit 'Storyseweing' from 9th till 11th of  December from 11.00 to 17.00  in PRINT Gallery, Prinsengracht 628 in Amsterdam.

Human hair necklaces by Kerry Howley

Attraction/Aversion is Kerry's award winning graduate collection, winning the Museum of Domestic Architecture's Arthur Silver Award for graduate innovation and excellence. Attraction/Aversion is a material exploration of how people can feel seemingly opposing emotional responses simultaneously.
The necklaces are made of human hair, a familiar material that we take pride in. However once off of the body hair becomes an innate source of aversion. Kerry wanted to see if she could make discarded hair attractive again. Through the familiar form of a necklace, and using patterns and symmetry that are instinctively pleasing, Kerry has created a delicate balance between the viewer/wearer’s feelings of aversion and attraction.

Kerry Howley is a contemporary jewellery artist recently graduated with a First Class BA Hons Jewellery and Accessories degree from Middlesex University. She is fascinated by the power materials have to influence our emotional response to jewellery, with a particular interest in how these emotions can be conflicting.

FASHIONCLASH Market part I

Last weekend Maastricht celebrated the opening of the second edition of Magisch Maastricht (Magical Maastricht event). The whole city center is decorated with lights.
In Centre Ceramique the lights were pointed to young designers. Somewhere around 40 talented designers and upcoming labels showcased and sold their work at the first edition of FASHIONCLASH Market. The market gained lot of attention in past few weeks and resulted in a large number of enthusiastic visitors. It was great to see how many labels from Maastricht and nearby region participated at FASHIONCLASH Market and the quality of the showcased products.
Here is an impression of a memorable first edition of FASHIONCLASH Market!

Kuppers/Wuytens at FASHIONCLASH Market

One of the paricipants at the 1st edition of FASHIONCLASH Market is the designer Jan Kuppers. Jan Kuppers is Master in Product Design. He graduated from the Art Academy in Genk, Belgium in 2001. He completed his studies in Sevilla, Spain. Together with Michael Verheyden he developed several collections, known as the 'kuppers&verheyden collections'. All his series are handmade with top quality materials. Besides his own series, he also designs industrial and exclusive products on customers desire.
The products from his 'kuppers' label breath quality and are timeless.  One of my favorite piece is the black belt without buckle. You can also order online.

Kuppers & Wuytens
Jan Kuppers works together with his partner and jewellery designer Karen Wuytens. They showcased their work at the FASHIONCLASH Market.Take a look.

Vincent Sterenberg

FASHIONCLASH Market showcased work of various young designers last weekend in Centre Ceramique in Maastricht.
One of the designers that took my attention is Vincent Sterenberg who graduated from ABK Maastricht last summer with the project Vitiligo. The products are made out of porcelain and leather and are reflecting on this skin disorder that Vincent is familiar with. With this project he translated his personal story into beautiful design and jewellery.

"Vitiligo is a visually striking skin disorder caused by depigmentation. This disposal creates questions, allowing me to create an interaction. This interaction is the key to my collection. From the interest in jewellery and products I created a collection that is different from estrangement."

Hello Fashion! Monique van Heist

In 2009, Dutch designer Monique van Heist launched Hello Fashion, a personal way to present and run moniquevanheist. Hellofashion is a continuous collection of ‘moniquevanheist’ classics by which she sets out to challenge the fashion system. This permanent and over time growing collection of garments, accessories and lifestyle products like furniture, make-up advice and even recipes, will be available for unlimited time.
Hellofashion cuts across the fashion system’s usual cycle by adding new products to the collection at any given time. The Hellofashion project comes with a loose-leaf catalogue. with each new product launch a supplement will be released. This way the hellofashion catalogue will amount to an interesting ‘moniquevanheist’ overview and keepsake object.

This morning I went through the cataloque again and here is a just small selection of some items I would like to have from Hellofashion. Take a look at the collection and the catalogue with very nice pictures.
