Encounter with promising designer, Pedram Karimi

One of my favorite discoveries at FAT - Arts & Fashion Week Toronto is the Montreal based fashion designer, Pedram Karimi.
The collection that he presented at FAT was exactly how he described it 'minimal, structural, timeless, androgynous, modern, playful'...just beautiful!.

Focus Germany exhibition at FAT Toronto 2012

|FAT| FOCUS GERMANY Presented by the Goethe-Institut
Fashion & art from Germany's hottest designers & image-makers: curated in collaboration with world-renowned Designer Scouts.
Focus Germany presented an onsite photography exhibit featuring 7 collaborative projects by German designers and fashion photographers.
The presented photography was very strong with one some of today best upcoming photographers and designers. Among them one of my favorite photographers Madame Peripetie. She created another mindblowing series of images with the label Moga E Mago. I was also very happy to see the work of Sadak and Daniel Bolliger-Samo.

Next to the photography there was a conceptual mixed media installation 'Best Before' by Katrin Spranger.
Focus Germany is part of the Goethe-Institut's focus on Culture+Economy, City+Climate and the celebration "50 Years Goethe-Institut Canada".

Liesje van den Berk - Draw the Limit

One of the highlights during FAT Arts and Fashion Week Toronto was the performance 'Draw the Limit' by Dutch artist Liesje van den Berk.  I had the pleasure to meet her during our stay in Toronto.
“ Draw the limit” is an interactive performance installation about the limits of your body and opens up new horizons. In a virgin white dressing room I draw the limits of the body of the spectators. Can I catch the bodyscapes of the spectator? When they are constantly on the move? Can I catch the before they escape the lines? During the four day’s the room will get coloured with bodyscapes. The result is a colourful installation filled with lines of boundaries of the bodies that are crossed over and over again.
Liesje van den Berk is a visual artist. She makes realistic drawings, which often grow into installations with real people and performance. She shows her work in galleries and public space in the Netherlands, Germany and the United States, such as Bart Kunst in Huis, Oerol and Grimmuseum Berlin.

In her work she questions the presence of human beings. How are you related to the space around you, the others and time? Which room exists between yourself and another? Can you ever really make contact with the other? And how will you preserve your personal space and inner peace in a world where you constantly overloaded by information, impressions and distractions. She researches these questions in realistic drawings, which often grow into installations with real people and theater or performance. The performances and installations create a direct contact and presence between her, her work and the public.

Raji Aujla at FAT Toronto

Raji Aujla presented a wearable and well tailored mens collection with nice details.
This collection was influenced by the clash between the British Raj and the Indian nationals during the first uprising against colonial rule. At that socio-political intersection – the Indian Rebellion of 1857 – the British Raj prevailed. However, an independent national revolution tremored. The collection narrates a story about the evolution from the bourgeois elite to national intelligentsia.
Raji Aujla is a journalist, reporting on stories of human rights abuses, international affairs, war and conflict. fashion allows her to tempt her creative conscious and tell stories through another medium. although a complete introvert, fashion is one space where she is able to express herself. She identifies herself as the lovechild of visual culture and politics on twitter. Her young brand reflects it.

Ego by WOUDENBERG at FAT Toronto

F/W 2012 by Toronto based designer Emily Woudenberg, entitled “Ego” is a approach the to the fashion ego.
In connection with the video it was a fun and fresh unway presentation. Discussing how the runway, blogs, magazines, and how the industry as a whole effect the way we perceive a designers work. Runway experience including a video, fashion, and internet component to take the experience and allow the viewers to gain deeper understanding in what part they play in seeing the designs. Using print and screen media as a texture within the materials, which integrates seamlessly into how one communicates a collection.
