The exhibition examines this question further and researches the changing relationship and cross-fertilization between haute couture and ready to wear. Through a variety of themes and a selection of spectacular silhouettes and accessories from high end designers and fashion houses, the exhibition highlights the significance of haute couture for contemporary fashion. Completed with photography, film, art and music, Haute-à-Porter offers a unique insight into the fashion industry of the last 30 years.

KABK Fashion Show 2016

Woody 's-Gravemade
The Fashion Show 2016 at Royal Academy of Fine Art The Hague (KABK)
In recent years the KABK has delivered multiple talented designers, such as Bastian Visch, Marije de Haan and Nikki Duijst who all won the prestigious Lichting Award.
Under leadership by the avant-garde designer Jurgi Persoons, the fashion and textile department of the KABK has become the show to scout talents. What stands out the KABK is the expressive approach not only with design and material but also with narrative.
Perfect example is the graduate Woody 's-Gravemade who made a poetic statement with his collection 'Dutch' Culture. In his collection he mixed Western and Middle Eastern culture, exploring the culture clash by blending street wear with islamic garments such as the burqa and niqab with typical Western garments such as shinny wadded jacket. Returning in the collection is the 'Turkentas', Dutch word for the cheap plastic bags mostly related to the stereotypical image of migrants.

The Fashion Show 2016 – Gerrit Rietveld Academie

On Friday, June 17th, the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam unveiled its new generation of talents. Staged at Rai Amsterdam the Fashion Show had an impressive setting and scenography, confronting the audience with avant-garde fashion proposals and presentations.
First part of the show contained work of the 1st and 2nd year students, featuring several promising designers.
Vere van Hal kicked off the graduation class of 2016 with a voice recording of a conversation while a group of people (dressed in ‘normal’ clothing) emerged from the audience to take a walk down the catwalk.

Vere van Hal (The Netherlands) presented a project entitled ‘Identify: A framed collection’, questioning the emotional value of clothing for the wearer. She researched the fashion system starting with the thought that remain in her mind ‘Not another collection!’. Deconstructing the meaning of it all, Vere expressed her research with a performance within the traditional form of a catwalk show.

Raf Simons Spring/Summer 2017

Raf Simons worked with the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation on his spring men's collection. For his return to Pitti Uomo, Raf Simons transformed Florence’s Stazione Leopolda into a Nineties-inspired warehouse rave with colored spotlights and electronic music paying  homage to Robert Mapplethorpe’s work.
“I was contacted by the foundation, usually it’s me contacting the artists,” Simons said right after the show. “They wanted to see if these could be transported to another field or medium.”
The designer had access to the photographer’s complete archive and selected images from different periods of his career, including portraits of Patti Smith, self portraits, still lives which he translated into prints on oversize cotton shirts, apron tops and apron skirts layered over slim pants.

Mapplethorpe, who died of AIDS in 1989, was celebrated for his questioning and merging of both good and bad taste, a dichotomy that can be seen in several nude self-portraits in the collection. His deep friendships are also represented in photos of Patti Smith, as well as Debbie Harry, Laurie Anderson, and various unknown subjects. Currently many of his work is on display in a massive Mapplethorpe retrospective at LACMA.

ArtEZ Fashion Show 2016

Marina van Dieren
ArtEZ Graduation Fashion Show 2016
It's Graduation time, each year an exciting season of future dreams and promises.
On 2nd and 3rd of June the Fashion Design department of ArtEZ Institute of the Arts Arnhem presented its new generation of fashion students.
The show started with the first year project 'Magnum Opuz', and the second year students project “Ceci n‘est pas une robe, followed by 'Collectie Arnhem 2016', the collection designed by the third year students.
Eventually, perhaps the most anticipated graduation show in the Netherlands, the Bachelor graduates of ArtEZ unveiled their collections.

The class of 2016 contains a large number of 24 graduates, frankly I do wonder why there is such a large number of students graduating.
Although none of the collections really blew away, certainly a display of promise was there in most of the collections. Designers that intrigued this year where Liesbeth Sterkenburg, Alissa Nicolaï, Ailene van Elmp, Johannes Offerhaus and Liesbeth Sterkenburg

In particular the menswear proposals where mostly strong such as the collections by designers Rosanne van Wijk, Boaz van Doornik, Leonie van Balen, Jorieke Tenbergen, Johanna Bas Backer, Max Beets and Marina van Dieren.

Johannes Offerhaus and Liesbeth Sterkenburg are nominated for the Frans Molenaar Couture Award. Ailene van Elmpt and Johanna Bas Backer are selected for the Lichting 2016, which will take place during Fashion Week Nederland in Amsterdam.

Ethnographic Museum Belgrade

If you are planning a trip to Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, than a visit to the Ethnographic Museum Belgrade is highly recommended. Providing a broad selection of ethnographic objects and costumes this museum gives an insight to a rich Serbian heritage and diversity of cultures.

From 13th of June until 19th of June the exhibition New Spirit of Heritage will display a contemporary interpretation by Serbian fashion designers. A selection of this work will be exhibited during FASHIONCLASH Festival July 1 and 2 in Maastricht.
New Spirit of Heritage is orginized in relation to 25th anniversary of the Belgrade based Click, a fashion agency responsible for organisation of Belgrade Fashion Week.

The Ethnographic Museum in Belgrade was founded in 1901, when the Ethnographic Department was separated from the National Museum to become an independent institution. The proposal to establish a museum that would study folk life and the conceptual and theoretical framework for such a museum were drafted by the historian Stojan Novaković, the Secretary of the Serbian Learned Society and subsequently a full member of the Serbian Royal Academy (presently the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts).

Various ethnographic objects, including some earthenware and metal vessels, jewellery, amulets, glass and textile items, weapons, tools, Easter eggs and other museum items were transferred to the Foundation Stevča Mihajlović – the house that Mihajlović bequeathed by his will “to the Serbian nation” for his “eternal memory with the purpose of converting it into a museum for the Serbian Kingdom”. Sima Trojanović, PhD, was appointed as the guardian (director) of the museum, whereas Nikola Zega was subsequently appointed as its first curator. The inauguration of the first permanent exhibition of the EthnographicMuseum was organized on September 20, 1904, on the occasion of the centennial of the First Serbian Uprising.
During the first years of its work, the activities of the Ethnographic Museum were focused on the purchase of museum items and the presentation of the Kingdom of Serbia abroad. Items to be included in museum collections were collected during field research throughout the then territory of Serbia and the neighbouring countries where the Serbs also lived.

In World War I, a large number of museum items were destroyed, as well as the documentation and the library. After the war, new field research campaigns were undertaken with the aim of filling the gaps in the collections. During that period, guest exhibitions organized abroad were less frequent. The museum library was re-established in 1920. Today, its holdings contain about 60,000 publications: 33,000 books and about 27,000 journals dealing with ethnology, anthropology and related scholarly disciplines. Between the two world wars, the New Inventory and the Alphabetical Catalogue of all museum objects were compiled, the Department of Musical Folklore and the Department of Illustration were established, while the museum objects were classified according to materials from which they were made.
During World War II, museum objects were packed and removed from the building in which the museum was housed at that time. After the war, the museum was moved into the building of the Belgrade Stock Exchange at No. 13 Studentski Trg (Square).
The museum collections currently contain about 200,000 items, 56,000 of which are ethnographic objects.
Since its founding until the present day, the museum has been dedicated to professional collecting and the study of museum objects and ethnogenetic processes, traditional material culture, social relations and family life, customs, beliefs and folklore. It has also been involved in the study of the features of Serbian culture, as well as those of other ethnic groups living within the region. In addition to collecting artefacts, since the 1960s, team research into the ethnographic areas of northeastern and western Serbia was introduced as a permanent activity of the museum. Research results are published in professional and academic journals and catalogues.

The EthnographicMuseum in Belgrade organizes temporary and permanent exhibitions. Eight permanent exhibitions and several hundred temporary exhibitions in the country and abroad have been organized so far. The eighth permanent exhibition, titled The Folk Culture of the Serbs in the 19th and 20th Centuries, was set up in 2001. Over the past twenty-two years, the International Festival of Ethnographic Film has been a regular programme organized by the museum. The museum also organizes workshops for children and adults, lectures, book presentations and concerts.

Walter Van Beirendonck for IKEA

Walter Van Beirendonck collection for IKEA is out!

IKEA the Swedish furniture retailer who has been famous for inexpensive minimalist design since 1943 came up with an unexpectedbut exciting twist to collaborate with the eccentric designer Walter Van Beirendonck.

“I came up with a story about characters living in the clouds, and the sun and the moon which were very sad because there’s so much going wrong in the world. They’re crying and big tears are falling down and the clouds get big holes. The cloud people really start to panic, What’s going on? Our clouds are broken!” says Van Beirendonck on his inspiration.”
And that story, in fact, became a story with different characters and also by the end, different patterns. Every character had a very specific pattern and specific look; I used this to create different ranges of prints and fabrics,” he adds.

Van Beirendonck was born 4 February 1957 in Brecht, Belgium and is a Belgian based fashion designer. He graduated in 1980 from the Royal Arts Academy in Antwerp and since 1983, had been presenting his own collections. Most of his work is inspired by the visual arts, literature, nature and ethnic influences. His unusual color combinations and a strong graphic influence are a trait for many of his collections.

In a video released by IKEA, the designer says that his textiles are based around a concept he calls Wondermooi which is the Flemish word for “beautiful”.
