A project by FASHIONCLASH & MAFAD, in collaboration with the Maastricht Academy of Performing Arts
The opening of FASHIONCLASH Festival took place on Thursday 29th of June at the Forza Fashion House in the LAB Building/Het Radium. This was also the official opening of the The Forza Fashion House, the new breeding ground for creative, cultural and entrepreneurial Maastricht and also the new FASHIONCLASH office. Directed by theatre makers Joost Horward and Nina Willems the evening contained interdisciplinary performances and installations by students from MAFAD and Maastricht Academy of Performing Arts.
PRE-STIMULIS Project
Specially for the opening of the festival, FASHIONCLASH teamed up with MAFAD (Maastricht Academy of Fine Arts and Design). In the context of the new design curriculum ‘BODY, OBJECT & MATERIAL’, the second-year BODY design students were assigned to do artistic research on the ‘senses’ in relation to the festival’s theme 'Fashion Makes Sense'. In addition, each student has been connected to one or two students from the Maastricht Academy of Performing Arts. Based on the research of the design students, each team developed a concept in which they expressed their vision and findings on the ‘senses’ and new ways how to create an enriched embodied experience for the audience.
Marcel van Kan (MAFAD) and Branko Popovic (FASHIONCLASH), togehter with Joost Horward and Nina Willems coached the students during the proces of research and execution of the performances. The project concluded in nine participatory installations / performances.

Colour Fluctus, part 9
Colour Fluctus part 9 registers an unique footprint, captured by colour. The movement, translated by the pigments, shows a timetable and controls the colours and patterns. The impact of the movement becomes visible once the colour is poured into the water. At the same time, we archive and measure the body movements as manifestations of emotions. The pattern is a memory of this particular moment and tells a story about one's character.

You're isolated, but not totally, you're in a different place. You're the only one seeing this view right now on that moment from when you step in till you step out, which choice is yours. You choose the timing and how it will be inside of abstraction. Your mind is turning, but not the body. In that it’s as an inside separation as the outside from reality. But what is reality?
Three-dimensional universe with strict rules and logic. The space where everything has certain emotional meaning. Perceiving the world outside and reflecting thoughts inside, let the movement catch you to find a way out until the decision to turn back will come.

‘Reizunterflutung’
The ability of multi tasking is one of the big phenomenons of the human mind. For example: In a typical conversation most of us can breathe, speak, think, move and listen without a lot of effort. At the same time our brain processes the information of facial expression, tone of voice, background smell and people walking by ‘in the corner of our eye’.
But doing everything at the same time, we tend to neglect the important. It gets harder to focus on the urgent and to set priorities. Distracting ourselves with all kinds of impulses, we don’t confront us with ourselves anymore. Multitasking becomes a constant overstimulation in our daily life.
When all impulses cease to exist,
When it gets silent, we realise how loud it has been.

The sense of Agency
The sense of agency refers to the feeling of control over actions and their consequences when we make voluntary actions. We tend not to feel as though they simply happen to us, instead we feel as though we are in charge. The sense of agency refers to this feeling of being in the driving seat when it comes to our actions. It is the background buzz of control we feel for our voluntary actions when not explicitly thinking about them. This is essential for you to believe in your capacity to influence your own thoughts and behavior, and have faith in your ability to handle a wide range of tasks or situations. This project allows you to reflect on this particular sense and how it influences us. Are we in control?

Spatial Perception
As human beings we occupied a space with our bodies. The spatial perception is an important biological tool. Combining view sense, hearing sense, balance and haptic system we can analyse our surroundings and the relationship with our body. We can know in which position we are in a room, how far are the walls and whether we are in the right direction. We are able to recognize shapes, sizes and distances. Without this sense we would feel disoriented, lost. What if the space construction couldn’t be possible without the human body? Looking for the most intimate connection between the human body and space, in this performance-installation the construction of the space is working in synergy with the body, changing each second and creating different spatial situations. Come close and feel these on-going constructions of space!

Verisimilitude
We are all our own catalyzers/ filters of reality to experience the world. Putting two people in the same environment/ situation will still cause two entirely different experiences/ realities, due to the fact that experienced evidence determines our judgement. Although that is a beautiful trait which makes us individuals, it often causes avoidable misunderstandings.
Sensory Processing Sensitivity (SPS), a personality trait, a high measure of which defines a highly sensitive person (HSP), has been described as having hypersensitivity to external stimuli, a greater depth of cognitive processing and high emotional reactivity. People with high sensory processing sensitivity comprise about 15-20% of the population and are thought to process sensory data more deeply due to the nature of their nervous system (Thalamus).
We envision a body performance that outlines the mind of a high sensitive person by including phenomena many people could identify with to break the boundary between own mind and outer world to overcome mundane issues and create a mental platform for encounter, sympathy and balance.

Moving narcissistic ego’s expressed in geometrical forms.
• I want to be the only one
• I want to possess you
• I want to be worshiped
We humans are one of only a minority of species that pass the so-called ‘mirror test’, by showing signs of recognition when face-to-face with ourselves in a mirror. Supposedly, this is proof of our sense of self, but still, only offers evidence of being able to identify a body as our own. Would we be able to recognize a reflection of our own mind? Would we be able to recognize our emotions, our essence, our decisions, our heritage, our passage through time? But did we not go totally overboard with this endless obsession with ourselves? Is this generation not growing up in totally self-obsessed narcissists? And will this behavior influence our choices about ourselves and others?

Cyber Space
On our modern times now, the humans have developed the new sense of technology. Some people are able to perceive electronic waves, certain signals, recognize sound or visual actions that remind us what to do in a certain moment or modifies our lives. My idea is to point out and visualize the cyber space that surrounds us, because nowadays everyone is connected somehow to the internet. The internet knows everything about us and it is hard to stay anonymous. For myself, it is important to transmit the feeling of limitation of personal space, suffocation and anxiety, because it is hard to get out of that bubble, out of that cyber world.
In order to visualize the sense of technology and being kept in a cyber bubble, I have chosen the basic RGB colors, symbolizing that people are kept in or behind the screen and in the colors of the world wide web. If these basic colors, red, green and blue clash together, a white light appears and all colors get dissolved. There only remains emptiness and white space.
