young n sang - Street Vendors

young n sang showed second sustainable collection
'Street Vendors' during Helsinki Fashion Week

This season was inspired by Korean traditional market. If you go to Korean Traditional Street Market, you can feel the market’s own vibesbecause there are lots of coloful prints clothes, odds and ends that are mainly hanging on the wall or placed in the center of the shop. They seem so fancy and wild. Street vendors outfit have their own colors that you can’t find anywhere. They don’t have any certain rule in how they wear. They do not consider harmony of incompatible fancy colors and prints combinations, and harmony of silhouettes. These features took our attention. Their outfits might be ridiculous to others, but they were richous to us. We love their weird harmony.

For this collection, we mainly used colorful granny shirts and vivid flower prints, hip sacks that are necessary wearing items of street vendors in Korea. Also, traditional tweed jacket details, odds and ends are used for this collection. In fabrication, we had focused on hand weaving and patchworking skills. For example, we made handwoven denimlik jacket which made of vinyl clothes. Also, we made handwoven shirts from leftovers for aming to be zero waste collection.

MAFAD Graduation Expo 2019

Jolieke Kessels
MAFAD Graduation 2019 exhibition took place from July 4 to 7 at the building of academy. The exhibition featured graduates from fine arts and design department. Unlike the other academies in The Netherlands MAFAD graduation did include a fashion show. The Body design students will present their fashion show during FASHIONCLASH Festival in November.
The exhibition already provided a close look to their projects.
The graduates presented a variety of concepts based on sustainability, sportswear, slow fashion, craftsmanship and emancipation of menswear.
Julina Vanille Bezold presented a well-researched collection by presenting a sustainable design manifesto that aims to create a new awareness for the appreciation of clothing. By equating the new ancient holistic teaching of the Chinese Wu Xing concept with a holistic design approach, her collection contains five outfits that can all be worn in multiple combinations. In addition she created a film to show a glimpse behind the Wu-Xing philosophy, namely that everything in the world and in the universe is connected.
Michelle Cornelissen created an alter ego 'Michi'm' portrated as a Disney villian based on her personal characteristics, visualising the different identities behind a single person and the freedom to play with identities. Natalia Rumiantseva presented a collection of jewellery objects inspired by her childhood spent on a small farm in Russia and the relationship of all species in the world. Her project 'Can you kill the chicken?' touches on many aspects of our culture, society and emotions. 'We based our civilization on using animals and for centuries cruelty was and still is an integral part. However, what are the reasons for the cruelty and how do we preceive it nowadays in time of humanization and progress?'
Jolieke Kessels combined traditional crafts with contemporary materials and techniques aiming to showcase slow fashion and a gettaway for the busyness of our lives.
The Body design department exhibition also featured work of Dana Lipka and Ashley Luypaers, both Lichting 2019 finalists and work of Max Niereisel and Empar Juanes Sanchis.

WDKA Fashion Show 2019

Mirthe Alferink
On July 5th, the fashion design class of 2019 from the WDKA  (Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam) presened their graduation show at Ubik theatre. The show, organized by the students themselves, provided a charming insight into their mostly personal graduation projects. With themes as sustainability, LGBTQ+ community, internet culture, streetwear and sportswear the show provided a diverse approach to contemporary fashion design.
Chloë Severien presented a ready to wear knitwear collection based on re-usable yarn made from recycled PET plastic. By using fabrics as a medium to tell stories, Larissa Ishimwee gave voice to a group of illegal refugees of Amsterdam.
Robin Cuppens deconstructed the business suit, Susanne Vos presented the 'new look' based on sportwear and Axel Verwee made his collection by waisted tents from festivals. Mickey Nerrings presented the most outspoken collection based on voilence and bullying against the LGBTQ+ community. He translated this into the idea to use the scarecrow as a metaphor to scare away the bullies and fight against anti-gay voilence. Project that intruiged the most was Adobefashion by Rosalie van Pinxteren. With this project she explored the influence of internet culture on today's digital fashion and its role in our changing perception of reality. By translating photoshoped shapes into actual garments she questioned if we can still distinguish reality from manipulation and vice versa. In addition, she aims to show that fashion manifests beyond the physical world.

HKU Fashion Graduation Show 2019

Armia Yousefi

On June 26th, at in Utrecht, HKU fashion design graduates showcased their final collections.
'THE DON'T KNOW SHOW expressed perfectly the free spirt of the class of 2019. Designers who had approached their projects more experimentally showed the interesting proposals such as Esra Copur who with her project 'Programmed Society' analysed the society’s daily habits and routines in relation to consumer behaviour. She wants to portray people as programmed individuals who are constantly buying items because of the routine they got stuck in.  Or Iris Otten who showed a performance with models attached to objects, struggling with imposed restrictions. She visualised her project with a live performance and in a fashion film.
Studio Noij (by twins Dafne and Nikki Noij) researched the role of the traditional cliches of The Netherlands such as tulips and windmills and the contradiction that these nostalgic symbols do not play a role in the contemporary Dutch culture.
Jiske Kosian addressed the mental issues such as burn-out epidemy. With her collection she aims to break the taboo surrounding negative emotions in particular in regard to men, and to address that vulnerability can exist without diminishing masculinity.
Sophie Wantia presented a playful collection 'Need to Play' as an antidote to the daily pressures, both in society as well as in design methods. While Laila El Alaoui got inspired by hyperreal tourism, Anouk van Kampen Wieling sent her models to a journey to Rockall in Atlantic Ocean, posing a question: How do you prepare for a yourney to nothing?
Armia Yousefi impressed with a personal collection inspired by his Persian heritage, mythology, politics and old photos of his parents' wedding. "The photos date from the late 1970s and were taken in Tehran during the revolution. I was inspired to design my own wedding scenario, and I made a collection that includes elements such as mythology, romance and mixed martial arts."

Featured fashion designers: Leila El Alaoui, Dewi Barend, Esra Copur, Kim Fransen, Janique Hamers, Melanie Hazeleger, Patrick Hiemstra, Eef Hietbrink, Dennis Huizinga, Anouk van Kampen Wieling, Teddy Kamper, Jiske Kosian, Studio E (Ellis van Loosbroek& Elise de Wit), Veerle Martens, Pam van der Meijs, Studio Noij (Dafne & Nikki Noij), Iris Otten, Loes Pennings, Sophie Wantia, Armia Yousefi

Fashion Statements - Amsterdam Museum

Bas Kosters
The clothes we wear reveal something about our personality. Fashion expresses our identity, what we consider important or what we stand for. Curated by Marian Duff, the founder of MAFB and OSCAM, the exhibition features more than 75 historical costumes, each of which was used by their wearer to express themselves or to express a message. In this exhibition, six leading contemporary designers place their creations alongside and opposite our historical collection of fashion from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
For this exhibition, Ninamounah, Bas Kosters, Karim Adduchi, Marga Weimans, Patta and Art Comes First where invited to reflect on the context of the exhibition. In a short documentary they give their personal vision of the exhibited historical clothing.

Fashion Statements is on show until September 8th.

KABK The Hague Fashion Show 2019

Stella Kim
photo: Nosh Ipenburg, Lumi Tuomi and Melissa Schriek
Exposed - The show of the fashion and textile department of the KABK, The Royal Academy of Fine Art The Hague took place on 14th of June. The show featured work of bachelor students and fashion and textile graduates of 2019.

The Keep an Eye Textile & Fashion Award 2019 went to textile graduate Stella Hyunju Kim who impressed with her project 'Artificial Calm', exploring the contemporary symbolic meaning of fire.

'My project consists of 2 single beds and a curtain. The bed and curtain symbolises our daily life whilst harbouring the most textiles in our rooms. I researched the patterns of how fire can destruct, deconstruct and decay the structures of daily objects and how it creates layers containing a story. I am introducing a new way of preserving burnt objects by placing it in a room context just the way it is, telling its untold story and values.'

Trumaine Huijts translated his irritation over large fashion brands that are taking over the elements from the skate culture. By experimenting with knitting techniques, he wanted to give something back to the skate community, by showing what else skate clothing can be.  The fashion graduate Lina Lau researched on the meaning of term 'luxury' and translated this in a rich and layered collection, namely the 'A Premium Mediocre Collection'. She mixed historical references from the Renaissance with contemporary sportwear. Vincent Wong impressed with the stunning and well tailored menswear collection 'Juvenile Oddity', exploring traditional tailoring and the influence of technology on our lives.
The theme of technology also occured in the work of Otilia Vieru, exploring speculative virtual reality and the potential impact and influence of technology on mankind. 'Welcome to the Braindrain'  is based on a world in which technology plays a major role, and the humanity does not know how to deal with it. Shijia Hao got was inspired by large cities that are suffering from urbanization and industrialization showing a imaginative working class in a futuristic dystopia.

AMFI - Graduation Fashion Show 2019

Marie Lamberechts
On June 12th, at the Kromhouthal in Amsterdam, AMFI fashion design graduates showcased their final collections. The evening consisted of a fashion show part and then an exhibition.
The show was one with a number of strong presentations and performances and above al a great dose of graduation energy. A number of students had succeeded in making a statement in a few minutes with a clear story. The simple catwalk, rather a theater setup, suited well for the presentations. The highlight of the evening was the display of a diversity of approaches and investigations. Projects on digital fashion, movement, gender, sustainability and identity passed the runway; from blow-up balloon dress presented by Marie Lamberechts, to quirky dance performace by Kateryna Boiko, spectacular take in 'gabber' subculture by Lotte Valkenburg, striking 3D virtual fashion design collection by Iris van Wees, sustainable fashion statement by Juris Efneris to the moving re:GENDER collection and short docymentary by Shannen Bijkersma.

On Saturday 8 June 2019, the fashion department of the Gerrit Rietveld Academy presented "Fashion Show 2019", containing the graduation collections of a new group of designers and a selection from the work of first- and second-year fashion students.
The venue of the show this year was the vacant Tripolis complex designed by Aldo van Eyck, located on the edge of the Zuidas in Amsterdam.

They offer challenging visions on the medium of fashion with a sense of the contemporary and the visionary. They relate to their diverse cultural backgrounds and question Western reality and identity. Especially the proposals that discuss and open up the complexity of today's society made an impression.

JOIN Collective Clothes

JOIN Collective Clothes
A project by Anouk Beckers i.c.w. Beau Bertens

JOIN Collective Clothes is a design and research project which explores fashion as a collective practice, focusing on making and wearing clothes together. Everyone is invited to design and make a part of a garment – for example a sleeve - which together can be connected into full outfits. The pieces made by various makers form an ever-growing collection, questioning constructed values created by the (fast) fashion industry. The launch of an open-source manual marks the start of the project, and is followed by a series of workshops and designer commissions. All results will be exhibited at the end of 2019.
JOIN Collective Clothes is an initiative by fashion designer Anouk Beckers and graphic designer Beau Bertens.

JOIN Collective Clothes – a modular system The base of JOIN Collective Clothes is a modular clothing system that consists of four different shapes which can be combined into a full outfit (a sleeve, a top, a trouser leg and a part of a skirt). An easy-to-use open source manual invites people to get started in designing and making the pieces themselves. This manual is available at San Serriffe for €10,- or can be downloaded for free at www.joincollectiveclothes.com. On this website, all the results are collected to create an ever-growing collection of garment-pieces, designed by people all over the world.

“What if we open up the fashion system and explore it as a non-fixed entity, a system where people can playfully join in, where everyone is invited to create fashion together?” Initiator Anouk Beckers on JOIN Collective Clothes:

Workshops - JOIN the collective Fashion is a collective practice, although it is often perceived as something that is not for everyone. To grant everyone access, JOIN Collective Clothes will set up a workshop tour. Everyone is invited to join one of the 4-hour workshops to design and make a garment-piece. At the end of the workshop, the results from the participants are joined into one full outfit. The process is playful, but at the same time critically questions the characteristics of the fashion system. Subjects such as ownership, identity, (intellectual) property, production methods, alienation, mystification and value creation are discussed through this project.

Skopje Fashion Weekend x United Fashion

Marija Kulušić
19th edition of Skopje Fashion Weekend x United Fashion

For several years now BPB has been supportive of Skopje Fashion Weekend, following the fashion scene from the former Yugoslav republic of Macedonia, recently renamed to North Macedonia. Against the background of the recent political history, tough economic situation and complex social structures, Skopje Fashion Weekend is a recurring fashion weekend that looks primarily ahead. Although I was in Skopje once before, this visit gave a small insight into the relatively small fashion scene of Macedonia.
What made this 19th edition special, is the cooperation with United Fashion, a project funded by Creative Europe. Thanks to this collaboration, the SFW organization has put together an international program with mainly young and emerging labels. In particular, there were many designers from the South East Europe and Ex-Yugoslavian region such as Marko Feher from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Marija Kulušić from Croatia and Sofija Urumović from Slovenia.
The programme contained fashion shows, showroom and an exhibition by Ivan Asen 22 avant-garde fashion collective from Bulgaria. The core of the 19th edition was the United Fashion SEE Showroom.  Skopje Fashion Weekend took this opportunity and gathered designers and professionals from across Europe, making the short trip to Skopje worth the effort.

United Fashion is carried out by a cluster of European fashion support associations MAD Brussels (BE), Flanders DC (BE), ModaLisboa (PT), Baltic Fashion Federation (LV), Maison de Mode (FR), Fashion Weekend Skopje (MK), Fashion Council Germany (DE) and Not Just A Label (UK).
The aim of the project was to enhance the culture of fashion designers across Europe to be more business minded and at enhancing their competitiveness internationally, without limiting their creativity. United Fashion received the support from the Creative Europe programme of the European Union.
Through a number of international network events and transdisciplinary training workshops, over a four-year period, more than 150 fashion designers will have the opportunity to participate by showcasing their collection, getting to know and understanding several European markets, developing new skills in fashion tech, sustainable fashion, production, craftsmanship, and business models.

As members of the international association that is implementing the ‘United Fashion’ project, organizers of this year’s 19th edition of Fashion Weekend Skopje welcomed twenty-nine emerging labels from all over Europe. The main goal of the ‘United Fashion SEE Showroom’ project in Skopje is to promote fashion designers from Southeastern Europe (SEE) to international buyers and media representatives, as well as to connect designers from the European Union with Macedonian factories. For this purpose, activities included presentation of the SEE market by professionals in the industry, presentations from selected local manufacturers, visit to the factories and meetings between participating designers and local producers.

The list of participants featured in the showroom included Andra Handaric (Romania), Arthropoda (N.Macedonia), Chic Utility (Romania), Concepto (Romania), Cristina Real (Portugal), Diana Arno (Estonia), Dragana Mihajlovic (Serbia), Ece Özalp (Turkey), Evgenija Zafirovska (Slovenia), Faulhaber Products (Germany), Hanfaz (France), Kokoro (Montenegro), Ksenija Kotev (N.Macedonia), Lila Style House (Bulgaria), Lommer (Greece), Marija Kulusic (Croatia), Marko Feher (Bosnia and Herzegovina), Mateyaneira (Croatia), MLS – Marie Laurence Stevigny (Belgium), n.d.c. made by hand (Belgium), Oh Suzy! (France), One Wolf (Latvia), Red Juliet (Belgium), Rosica Mrsik (N.Macedonia), Senem Unal (Turkey), Tanja Christiani (Germany), The Mannequin Collection (Greece), Toos Franken (Belgium) and Vesa Gruda (Kosovo).

Below you can take a look at the impressions from the Skopje Fashion Weekend and some highlighs.

FASHIONCLASH Festival 2019 - Campaign Launch

FASHIONCLASH presents the 11th edition of the international and interdisciplinary FASHIONCLASH Festival in Maastricht on 1 to 3 November.

The program with fashion presentations, exhibitions, crossovers with theater and dance, fashion talks, expert meetings, master classes and a public program gives designers and (stage) artists the opportunity to show their work to a broad (inter)national audience. The festival offers an opportunity to discover the latest talent and developments in fashion design and to be amazed by the art of fashion. Almost the entire program is accessible to the general public by means of ticket sales, free activities and targeted public programs. FCF is all about discovering new talent, boosting and shaping current developments in fashion art and opening up these developments to a wide audience. The 11th edition focuses on and is substantively shaped from the starting points: the Clash (art of fashion, experiment and cross-overs) and Fashion Makes Sense (sustainability and awareness about the impact and role of fashion in society).

‘For this edition, the starting point was to embody the renewed spirit of FASHIONCLASH, but with attention to where the basis of the platform comes from. The 2019 edition stands for the clash in FASHIONCLASH, the search for creating new fashion stories. With the new festival period (previously the festival took place in June / July) we are looking for a better connection to the international fashion agenda and we want to provide in a platform for the new generation of designers who will graduate in June.’ - FC team
Campaign The campaign images are created in co-operation with artist Lisette Ros and photographer Lonneke van der Palen.

‘Instead of a collection of colour, shape and material, Lonneke and I wanted to bring the image back to the essence; the pure. We tried to find the statement of the ‘clash’ in image and let go of fashion and put creation and searching for boundaries within different disciplines in a broader perspective. That’s why we started experimenting with transparency, in figural and literal sense. It was mostly about the interaction between Produced, Nature and Transparency. I tried to become a literal blank canvas. With my body, I tried to find the boundaries of transparency and ‘being’ and to combine this with other materials that are inspired by what is natural.’ - Lisette Ros

GAMUT SS 2019

GAMUT is driven by six fashion designers and a visual director. Based in Paris, GAMUT purposely nurtures its links with other disciplines : designed like a laboratory, it functions without a leader and takes form through a contributory, open and collective exploration. GAMUT sprang from the desire to establish a horizontal model. Creation takes place with a completely collective and egalitarian approach, in a positive and respectful manner.

GAMUT’s aesthetics of collage is transposed through digital editing into the SS19 campaign. The models are installed in an imaginary reconstituted frame, a wobbly mixture of the workspaces of the GAMUT collective and familiar places of its members. At a time when one exists primarily on the Internet, when success is measured by the strength of algorithms and when David can finally compete against Goliath, GAMUT claims its right to be liar.

The campaign begins a reflection on duplicity, further developed in a fashion film project that will be presented at the same time as the next GAMUT collection, on June 22, 2019.

Cracow Fashion Week 2019

Cracow Fashion Week 2019

The Cracow Fashion Awards Gala marked the start of the 10th edition of Cracow Fashion Week (March 9-17), organized by the Cracow School of Art and Fashion Design in partnership with the City of Krakow and thanks to support of the partners AliExpress, Galeria Kazimierz and ICE Kraków.

Cracow Fashion Awards is a platform for fashion graduates of School of Art Design of SAPU. Out of more than 30 graduates, 14th where shortlisted to compete for the prizes.
On behalf of FASHIONCLASH, Nawie Kuiper and Branko Popovic participated in judging.

Anna Nowak-Curyło was named winner of the main prize. With her menswear collection "Identity" she was the deserved winner of the gala.

"The collection was created from the fascination of man and the mutual dependence of individuals. I wanted to show that we can not function one without the other, successes are achieved through the help of others. My collection would not happen without people who supported me and cooperated with me. I tried to pay special attention to details and the use of new technologies, I designed backpack with a moving hologram" - says Anna Nowak-Curyło.

Another designer that delivered a consistent collection was Monika Cieślik, who drew inspiration from make workwear. Other designers worth mentioning are Tamara Avdieieva, Oliwia Jankowska, Kordian Mędrala and Nina Sakowska.
In an evening with a varying level, men's clothing outfits stood out. Nice outfits appeared here and there, but not everyone managed to implement the core of their idea into a complete story. Sometimes, the proposals were dated. Having said this, Poland is always a good reason to visit. For years, Poland has been a country to be aware of when it comes to acquiring new talent. Not to forget to mention to encounter the beautiful city of Krakow.
FASHIONCLASH has already presented a number of talented Polish designers such as Katarzyna Dworecka (Mindless) and Sandra Stachura who are alumni from Cracow School of Art and Fashion Design.

In addition, several guest designers where invited to show their work. Among them was Piotr Popiołek, a laureate of the Cracow Fashion Awards in 2017, presented a new collection inspired by the AliExpress portal, showing the symbiosis of his own fashion and global shopping brand. Thanks to SAPU’s cooperation with Donghua University from Shanghai (China), three Chinese designers, Huaiqun Sun, Mentong Yang and Quingyao Meng, presented their collections.

The international jury panel was composed of, among others, Katarzyna Sokołowska, Ilona Majer (MMC Studio), Jerzy Antkowiak, Landiana Yolo (influencer, deputy director of the Feeric Fashion Week), Nawie Kuiper and Branko Popović (FASHIONCLASH directors), Maria Cristina Rigano (Alta Roma, Monte Carlo Fashion Week), Bin Chen (Professor Donghua University, China), Natasha Pavluchenko, Anna Wasińska-Golonka (member of the board of OTCF, owner of the 4F brand), Anna Jatczak and Anna Puślecka.

MAISON the FAUX presents "MAISON pour MAISON"

Settings that reflect the chaos of rehousing. Performers and movers swanned around, maneuvering through the sets and feeling at home within the constructed framework. MAISON the FAUX had their performers breaking free from borders and walls, transitioning from lonesome and confined sensibilities towards a feeling of togetherness.

The company of MAISON the FAUX is also subject to renovation: MAISON the FAUX is expanding their multidisciplinary ways. The creative studio is no longer accepting whole sale orders and is increasingly focusing on their work as a creative design studio (art-direction, spatial design, costume design etc.) and e-commerce. Y/Project Fall 2019

Musician Sevdaliza wearing one of the striking looks

In past years Glenn Martens continuously delivers. He one of the most relevant of this generation. For Y/Project he presented a collection with main focus on eveningwear and his experimental tailoring signature.
For WWD he stated the following, which is exactly the apparent strength of Glenn Martens. “We do what we want, and we really want to have fun, and we don’t really give that much of a s–t about anything else,” the designer said backstage. “The idea is that we really want to show garments. We don’t want to get stuck in all the hype.”
