Nieuw Jurk Loves Taiwan online exhibition

a fashion project inspired by social media

* A selfie is a self-portrait, usually made with a smartphone and uploaded to the internet. Making selfies is popular amongst youngsters.

Designer Esther Meijer, of fashionlabel Nieuw Jurk, was introduced to her customers and fans in Taiwan by the smartphone application Instagram. Taiwanese Nieuw Jurk customers made selfies* wearing their Nieuw Jurk items, adding the hashtag “nieuwjurk” (#nieuwjurk). Excited and curious she followed her designs to Taiwan to make an iPhone documentary about these Taiwanese It-kids and to organise a fashion show in Taipei, using them as models. The documentary project and fashion show led to an online exhibition, which starts today.

With this project Meijer embraces the opportunities of social media, and uses globalization to expand the world of Nieuw Jurk. She provides a platform for the Taiwanese youth who represent far more than ‘Made in Taiwan’, using fashion as a means of communication between cultures.
